Kumaris are revered by Hindus and Buddhists as living goddesses. Matina Shakya recently left behind that life and now spends her days in a very different reality.

For all the hate comments I just want to say that get some true information first. There are only three days in a year when kumari is actually shown to public. She can do whatever she wants rest of the days.she is given education and her parents and friends can visit her everyday.she is treated with atmost respect during her reign as kumari in kumari House. And once she gets her period she can go back to her parents house. A girl reign as kumari for mostly 4 5 yrs. it’s just the age old tradition which goes back to 1000years and we are just trying to preserve it.

I attended the same school and the principal at 2:00 pema maam ...she is a monster !!! She is a devil ! Once when I was 7 yrs old.. .. she showed no mercy and complete knocked me off and my head banged on the floor for not doing my homework of a day.... our uniforms were one piece dress till our knees and when I fell down... you know it flew up to my face and it was a great embarrassment you know...

Let me clear 😁

1. The video is very biased

2. Kumari doesn't smile bcz its a sign of bad luck btw it doesn't make sense to say "she doesn't smile" . she doesn't smile only in festival which takes around only few hours which is celebrated only 7-8 times in year

If u can say by clickin one picture of kumari without smile n write with big letters
Kumari doesn't smile... its such a disgusting way to disrespect othrs traditions.... 🤦‍♀️

2. Kumari are not forced to be kumari

3. Its on us what to do... ask every Kumari, they all are happy n proud that they were part of it

4. I hate these western biased news on someone rituals 😊

When most of the people think it's suffering to be a Kumari only the one born in this community knows it's greatest blessing they can Have.

the ignorance and hate for somebody's culture in the comments disgusts me. you just watched a 3 minute video, misinterpreted it and now you are a freaking expert on it. keep your ignorant opinions to yourself. our culture is one of the oldest and richest in our country and we are proud to be continuing it till now and in the future unlike others.

- BA, University of Kathmandu, 2017-2021
- Goddess of Nepal, 2008-2017

How weird would it be treated as a goddess your whole life, and then all of a sudden you're just a normal person.

You know this video makes it seem like life as a kumari is really bad and the girls are devoid of childhood, but I think you all should look into it more instead of just calling it backwards and stupid. We all might have different opinions, but its never right to call a community's tradition that has been going on for years stupid just after watching a 5 minute video. We all follow different religions, (and often different versions of the same religion) and we can't say something is just wrong without looking into it.

Kinda weird, no? Worshipping young girls that embody feminine energy before puberty...sounds funny to me

So "female energy " stops at puberty?👀👀👀🤯

Being kumari is such a blessing now
She's treated as a regular child after the festival now
There were a lot of superstition inside this but now it's all good❤️🇳🇵
