as a calligrapher of another language (Farsi aka Persian), there's a v thin window where writing remains "writing". after a certain point it's just drawing. especially if you increase or decrease the scale, you're essentially drawing the alphabet.
handwriting has an inherent ease of speed and dexterity to it. the minute one starts to think about the process of writing a given letter or symbol it stops being handwriting because everything slows down, even if it's imperceptible.
when i finally internalized this it made changing my writing style so much easier cz, then, calligraphy wasn't "handwriting", it was drawing. the mental blockade was lifted and I could easily change my handwriting. it was a brilliant brainhack. i highly recommend it.

For a new vacation sketch book I will add a map of the region I am going to. On the map I will put a dot of paint for each town or city visited. At times labeling each can get tricky as one runs it of room. I will also add the sketching and painting equipment I bring. Makes for a good way to keep inventory straight. The part about doing a mixing table of the paints I will be using is something I just might add to my journal. Have a great trip. I don't think anyone has said it yet, but there're also converters avaible for your calligraphy pen. If you just search the name of the brand and converter, than there will be several options which fit this pen.

Ooh, I’m looking forward to following your trip. I went to NZ (and back) just before covid. My title page was a map of North Island surrounded by some ocean with a dolphin, a kiwi bird, and a cute sheep—in a 4”x6” Hahnemuhle sketchbook. Some foreign trips I also sketch my minimalist travel wardrobe. I find a graphic is better than a list the next time I’m packing for a trip.

Have an incredible time in NZ. I was there in early February (arrived in time for the floods in Auckland!) I would recommend visits to Picton and Port Chalmers. Climb at the back of the Church at Dunedin to get amazing views of the bay.
