I put hours into this game as a kid,  
The random red ant colony always happens if you kill the red queen in your starting patch too quickly.
Did you know if you keep killing the spider the game eventually spawns a laser spider? Seriously, the spider shoots lasers at the ants.  Also, if you use the Exchange command which lets you pick a different ant in your colony to control you can use it on the spider and control the spider, but I think you take a big score penalty for doing so.
If you manage to get into the red nest you can steal their eggs and feed them to ant lions.  But, leaving a red egg on the surface causes a glitch where it fails to display the sprite for the egg and instead just shows random crap or a box with a number.
You can pick up the tiny pebbles and build walls with them, or plug the red ant holes.

I am a myrmecologist. Had ants instead of cats and dogs as pets. Did you know if you give ants juice, and they drink enough of it, that their butts will turn the color of the juice? Coolest thing ever to actually watch. XD Easier to tell on black ants obviously. XD

You never fought the red ants on their turf, that's where the fun is.

The SNES version is slightly more challenging in the main campaign, but not by much.  Once you've taken out the red ants in the initial plot, they reappear on the other end of the yard and have a chance to establish themselves before you reach them.  Breeding is also more restricted.  Still, once you've helped your ants establish a decent empire, it's still very possible to win on auto-pilot.  The black ants are not nearly as aggressive on the plot where you have your yellow ant, but if you've got an overall advantage, you can just go plop down in a plot with no red ants and watch the map from there.

The scenarios introduced by the SNES game were more engaging.  Rather than taking over multiple plots, you simply have to beat the red ants on a single plot.  The maps were more creative and varied, with occasional gimmicks like having to cross a street or needing food more often due to the heat.  Going back to the black ant AI mentioned earlier, they're just not going to be very aggressive on their own.  Your leadership and help becomes much more important.

You play this game very differently than I do, heh. I mainly ran around as the yellow ant and grabbed food or attacked the red ants. It took me a long time, but eventually I learned how you can swap to Soldier ants and how to recruit ants to follow you. I'd lead my squad on raids on the red nest or surrounded the spider to kill it, or whatever. It was ton of fun.

I love that this video is only 15 minutes long. Playing this to completion on an Amiga 500 as a kid was half of my weekend.

Nobody realised when he was calling the ant stupid then proceeded to leave the nest where a spider was saying "I love ants, they're so stupid."

I had a friend who's dad used to give me random old PC's games burnt to CD-R discs, and this was one of them. I would play SimAnt for hours and I loved it, thought it was the coolest thing playing from the perspective of the ant.

Sim Ant was the first Sim game I remember seeing that wasn't Sim City. A super popular game in my school's computer lab. It was always taken and I only got to play it a couple times and when I did I had no idea what the hell to do. Nice to finally see how it actually plays.

Got to love how the Windows 3.1 splash screen only lasts a second and then everything loads all at once. That would have been quite astonishing back in the 1990's when it was more widely used and no PC's that could even come CLOSE to doing that.

If you kill the red ant colony too fast, the game spawns another one. I've seen it before.

I took forever to win this game as a kid. I built huge fortified ant colonies, made myself a soldier and attacked basically everything with other soldiers following me. I would seal in the red ants so they only had one entrance and then I would go in and wipe them out. I did that on every tile, slowly making my way to the house and claiming it one tile at a time.
