I learnt this sixty years ago, in England with my grandmother, just after the second world war, we used metal templates to cut the papers, old envelopes, or any stiff paper we could lay our hands on, we used every scrap of cloth, or recycled clothes. We stitch through the papers, enough to secure the fabric however small to the paper, the papers were reused several times, untill they lost their stiffness. Tacking threads were pulled out, and also reused .squares, diamonds, octogons, hexagons, triangles, and coffins, were all used.

I love epp. I learned to use a small hole punch to put a hole in center of small shapes, this makes it easy to use a tool to pop out the paper.

Small tip on cotton thread if that's what you have laying around, you can run it over bar soap or beeswax and that makes a big difference in hand sewing. That's what my grandmother taught me when learning to do hand binding.

Thank you for breaking this down into simple steps and taking all the mystery out of it, Karen. I would like to see a similar video on foundation paper piecing. I've tried it and wasn't happy with the results. You have such a gift for explaining techniques and making them feel like they're do-able. My piecing has drastically improved after following your 3-step advice, especially on HSTs. My quilts are square without surgery!

I recently discovered that I prefer hand (slow) sewing to machine sewing, and always wondered what paper piecing was. Thank you for your explanations and tutorials! I’m also loving the videos with the timers, the clutter challenges, and you vlog! I have ADHD, non-hyperactive, so I have a tendency to get distracted, lose interest, or forget completely what I was doing, and you have so many tips I’m using!
