Basics of English Paper Piecing: Thread Basting

A our #sipteaandepp party we were talking about the basics of English Paper Piecing last month. Here is a short video to show you the process of thread basting in action.

All you need to start is some paper shapes, scissors, fine pin, thin needle and thread.

Notice how I am aligning the edge of the paper hexagon with the grain of the fabric. I find that this way the fabric wraps much better around the paper.

Using a fine pin really helps keep the fabric in place while you are trimming it and basting it. Not sewing through the papers makes the process of removing the papers much easier and saves you time.

Thank you so much for this! Using a pin will be very helpful. I was going to use a glue stick, couldn't find that. Turns out a pin will do nicely! Aces!
And skipping the knot, I like that.

I’m lazy when I do EPP. I use a charm pack, don’t trim, use an iron to fold (so quick) and then a dab of water soluble glue if needed. No need to baste and you can get straight to the stitching.

Are you actually sewing the paper? Or just basting the fabric over/around the paper?
