Who were the Samaritans in the New Testament of the Bible?

In 721 B.C.E. the Assyrian Empire conquered the northern tribes of Israel and took most of the people into captivity. They Israelites were deported as slaves and captives. There were, however, people who were able to remain.

The Samaritans were descended from the people of the northern tribes of Israel that were not deported by the Assyrian Empire. Rather than going into exile with the rest of Israel, the Samaritan’s ancestors stayed in Israel and intermarried with Gentiles. Therefore, the Jews of Jesus’s time did not think of them as either Gentiles or Jews. They did not associate with the Samaritans.

The Samaritans did not worship God in Jerusalem and instead looked to Mount Gerizim as their holiest place. According to their tradition it was one of the first places that the Israelites worshiped God after entering into the Promised Land.

There are two important stories about Samaritans in the New Testament. One is the Parable of the Good Samaritan in which Jesus praises the fictional Samaritan for helping a dying man when the priests and Levites of the Jews ignored him. The other is the meeting between Jesus and the Samaritan Woman at the Well in which the woman encounters Jesus and becomes a disciple and outspoken witness to the coming of the Messiah.

After the Ascension, Jesus also sent his disciples out specifically to be his witnesses in Jerusalem and Samaria and the ends of the earth.

Just recently came across your channel and have enjoyed viewing several of your playlists.

I appreciate the "straight" to the lesson/ topic approach also, no distractions [music].

Thank you!

If the judeans hated the samaritans because they worshiped in Mt. Gerizim, then this was inherited from when the northern israelites were already worshiping at the same site, before the Asyrians invaded and dispersed them and before the remnants intermarried forming the samaritans.
