As soon as the video started and I heard "it has ui so it's already miles ahead of the competition" I realised how incredible steam Dwarf fortress will be

Never thought too much about the sudden appearance of raids or traders. If they properly traversed the overworld, it might actually be a fun mechanic to intercept them (with the exception of mechanoids for obvious reasons)

I also feel that it depends on the colony's size, how much you care for individual people.
Start with one pawn? They're all you got so you might need to be interested in how they function. Gain 25 more pawns? It's natural that some of them become nameless cannon fodders for ya.

The overworld oh the overworld.
Let's hope a future dlc fleshes that out

The point of storytellers being named character is so that you can differentiate the patterns between them. Cassandra is the basic choice that offers ups and downs in near set interval, Phoebe is more relaxed in the surface but lulls you into false sense of security, while Randy can either hit you with either a back to back to back raid or none at all for a whole year which pissess off your cannibal colony. This also allows modders to make their own storyteller and give them a name that sets them out from the others like Winston Wavees who turns the game into pretty much a wave survival tower defense.

I think the one subject you didn't touch on, that also adds so much depth and diversity to the game play, is mods. I mean there are so many different mods such as zombies etc.

i agree with your late-game analysis, it definitely gets a lot bigger in scale as you grow, making the small details less and less important, but they do still exist and will throw a monkey wrench in your operation once in a while if you arent paying attention.

Love that you 'worship' the RNG factor of the game as much as I do. That's why I hate the newest Civilization VI compared to V. Because the other civilizations aren't as random as before. If you meet someone, you already know what he prefers and what not. So if you had a certain playstyle you already knew if the civilization you just met will hate or like you in a few minutes. It was annoying af.

I agree I play the way the game the same way. After a way the story becomes more about the colonies than the individual colonist

Thanks! Had this game for a while (used to love DF but I got tired of relearning keybinds and the hassle of dealing with the ui). Have yet to properly try the Steam version of DF but I just got all the DLCs and I'm having the most fun I've had in years.

I've had Biotech since launch day, and never had a Mechinator. Mostly because I play a xenotype that is psychically deaf, and that doesnt work together, but still...

I got volcanic winter when I passed day 250+ but holly crap the random guy is giving a lot of tough events in the worst time possible, got a manhunt as soon as my colonists and close to leaving the area for a quest and it was right where my colonists were leaving.

I disagree with you on the Mechanitors and Royals being mandatory, they both have downsides that sometimes you just can't bother with saving that noble from a rat again. You can still have plenty of fun just ignoring it for a later play through. Although I think the Imperial Trader only trading with Royals definitely makes it far too tempting and eventually I do have to get that throne room down

Well, now I'm actively try to play the game by not focusing on the colonists first time, and try to handle them as units in RTSes.
I like to play with low colonists number and each of them have some unique backstories. It's hard. :D
