GIANT Mako Shark Eats Sea Lion by Catalina Island!

Hey everyone, welcome back to another video! We were on our way back across the channel after camping in Catalina Island when we ran into something incredible. This massive mako shark was circling a sea lion it had taken down! It was probably the second biggest mako shark I have ever seen. What is the biggest shark you have seen in the wild?

Great video and that shark is a beast. Surprised that there were no other sharks in the area.

A lot of people don't know that Mako sharks can swim up to around 50 to 60 miles an hour! They really are my favorite sharks, so sleek and beautiful. Great footage!

Awesome footage! I love watching videos like this. I’m fortunate my cousin had a career in underwater welding, salvage & rescue. He also engineered pipes & pumps to get ocean water into the tanks at an aquarium on O’ahu. I was a young cowgirl from TX spending a summer with my family in HI & had never been in the ocean. He taught me to scuba dive & it was like discovering a new planet. I have so many great memories of our diving adventures. Thanks for sharing this footage!

This showed up on my daily YT feed for the first time. Like your channel. I subscribed. Ah yes, the Mako shark. Little cousin of the Great White. They have coloring and shine like a Mackerel I always thought.

We fish for Macos in Delaware. A friend of mine caught one 10 ft it weighed 985 lbs and at the time set a state record. The ironic part he was sadly killed when he was taken over the side wiring a 500 pounder in very rough conditions. He was a great angler and set many records. I tell you this because a Maco taste great, are fun to catch, but can be very dangerous. RIP Billy Verbanous, you taught me so much about sharking.

That's really cool footage! I'm surprised no white sharks showed up to have a snack. It's definitely big shark territory. Thanks for showing us this one.

Cool video. As a side note I really love that second song, Mulholland. It randomly came up in my recommendations a few months ago and I just love the vibe. I don't have any mako stories unfortunately. I don't spend enough time on the ocean so I rely on videos like this one.

I went down to the beach the other day and some guys who weren't locals were pulling in a long line. I rode up the beach and came back 5 minutes later .The fisherman were gone and they had left something on the sand
Turned out it was a 5 foot long shortfin mako
When I flipped it over to check it out and it's tail twitched and was flexing its gills.
So I dragged it into the surf and held it by the tail facing the waves.
Eventually it came around enough to kick and swim off .
I read later on that they are the best eating sharks around but at the same time it' was a beautiful looking creature so was glad I could give it a shot at living
It didn't wash up again so it either lived or something bigger ate it.
The tails on those things are awesome just so muscular

Great video of a stunning Mako! I've seen Great White sharks from the boat (and cage) on holiday in South Africa. Been snorkelling with a huge Basking Shark here in Shetland, it was much bigger than my RIB! Hoping to film more sharks this year, a Porbeagle would be great. We're at 60 degrees north so don't get the warmer water species.

I was doing a blue water SCUBA Dive off of La Jolla with a chain dangling 75' down from the back of the boat just hanging out waiting to see what swims by. We saw a Blue Shark swimming up current towards us. A Mako out flanked us and came in from the otherside of the current and caught us all offguard. It was in the 8' range, so graceful and so confident.

I agree with another comment that this animal appears to have been dead awhile. Could have died of old age or via collision with a vessel. I owned/operated a charter fishing business in Alaska and Mexico for over 20 years and have run across many road kills. Your commentary is extremely knowledgeable, very entertaining and presented at an excellent pace, tone and attitude... well done fellow sea worshiper, carry on! :-)
PS- I also agree with your view of Sea Lion management... akin to stocking the Montana woods with wolves and brown bears without accounting for the predation they bring. Everyone think, "oh, so cute..." until suddenly all your game down the chain is affected. Cheers

They are not very common here in our seychelles waters, but are spotted far offshore from time to time

Caught about a 10-12 pound Mako several years ago off Redondo Canyon looking for Yellows and kelp paddies. Sawed me off at the boat, but a beautiful "litte fish".

I caught two Makos on Farnsworth bank years ago. ( the backside of Catalina island also known as the 240 fathom spot) we were in a 17 foot Boston Whaler, the Makos were 2/3 the size of the boat and are capable of 55 mile an hour sprints, hook one and you will see something you’re never going to forget ! ( look these Makos up, you, a seal or anything else doesn’t want to be in the water with them !!)

Not a mako, but years ago we had a hammerhead swim slowly alongside our 17 ft tri-hull in Tavernier Creek in the Fla. Keys. We watched in amazement as it slowly cruised past our boat, pretty close to the same length.
