'Samoa Mo Samoa' by Shepherds Reign | New music video out now

Made with the support of NZ On Air

Music video produced by Sleeping Giant Films

A tale of death and victory, fear and bravery. Our new visuals capture the struggle of our people against the odds. At the end of the 19th century, three world superpowers, the US, Britain, and Germany, were vying for control of Samoa. The United States and Britain had just formed an alliance against the Samoans said to be on the side of the Germans. In March 1899, in a brutal display of power and aggression, the US warship Philadelphia opened fire and bombarded villages on the coast of Upolu. The shelling was indiscriminate and many Samoans, men, woman, and children were killed. For several weeks, US and British warships bombarded and terrorised many villages in an attempt to force their governance. Despite being thoroughly outmatched, our people stood tall, stood strong, and fought back. Together, we remember those who fought for our homeland. Samoa Mo Samoa.

SAMOA MO SAMOA (SAMOA FOR SAMOA)

A tatou mafaufau i tala fa'asolopito o Samoa, e iai nai tala faanoanoa. Tala o puapuaga ma faigata. Sau ia!
(If we think back on the history of Samoa, there are many stories of sadness. Stories of pain and hardship. Lets go!)

VERSE 1

Tala o tagata fia iloa ma mea ofoofogia na latou faia.
(A story of people with greed and the horrific things they caused.)
Le tiga ma faigata na o'o ai le atunu'u o Samoa.
(The pain and agony that Samoa experienced.)
A o le mana ma le alofa, (x3)
(But with the courage and love for their country,) x3
E le mafai ai ona faia'ina.
(they are unconquerable.)
O nu'u tetele na omai e tau. Tau ma tama, fafine ma nai fanau.
(The worlds strongest countries came to battle and conquer the men, women and children.)
O pomu tetele ma pulufana na feoti ai le tele o Samoa.
(Huge bombs and bullets killed countless Samoans.
A o le mana ma le alofa, (x3)
(But with the courage and love for their country,) x3
E le mafai ai ona faia'ina.
(they are unconquerable.)

CHORUS

Sau! E tau! Le fia ma fia selau
(Come and fight! The many hundreds)
Sau! E tau! Olaga ma'imau
(Come and fight! Of wasted lives)
Sau! E tau! Fafine ma nai fanau
(Come and fight! The women and children)
Sau! E tau! Le toto ua masa'a
(Come and fight! Their blood spilt)
Sau! E tau! le fia ma fia selau
(Come and fight! The many hundreds)
Sau! E tau! Olaga ma'imau
(Come and fight! Of wasted lives)
Sau! E tau! Fafine ma nai fanau
(Come and fight! The women and children)
Sau! E tau! Samoa mo Samoa!
(Come and fight! Samoa for Samoa!)

VERSE 2

Aiga ma nu'u ua vaevaeina ona o nei tagata ese.
(Families and villagers turn against each other due to these foreign countries.)
O malumalu ma fale ua tanumia e le afi.
(Churches and houses engulfed by flames.)
Leai se auala e puipui ai latou mai au'upega faigata o le fili.
(No way to defend themselves from these foreign weapons.)
O le loto o le Samoa e le solomuli.
(The heart of a Samoan never backs down.)

CHORUS

Sau! E tau! Le fia ma fia selau
(Come and fight! The many hundreds)
Sau! E tau! Olaga ma'imau
(Come and fight! Of wasted lives)
Sau! E tau! Fafine ma nai fanau
(Come and fight! The women and children)
Sau! E tau! Le toto ua masa'a
(Come and fight! Their blood spilt)
Sau! E tau! le fia ma fia selau
(Come and fight! The many hundreds)
Sau! E tau! Olaga ma'imau
(Come and fight! Of wasted lives)
Sau! E tau! Fafine ma nai fanau
(Come and fight! The women and children)
Sau! E tau! Samoa mo Samoa!
(Come and fight! Samoa for Samoa!)

Samoa mo Samoa! (x3)
(Samoa for Samoa!) x3

VERSE 3

Ua fa'ato'ilaloina ae e te le fiu.
(You foreigners were defeated but you wouldn't give in.)
Le tou fiapule i le matou atunu'u.
(Your determination to rule our country.)
Le po uliuli na fafau ai tonu e fetaua'i po'o ai e pule.
(The blackened night all 3 foreign countries assembled to create a new plan to see who would rule us.)
Ua potopoto aiga ma nu'u i le le mautonu ae e loto tetele
(Our families and villagers gathered together confused but fearless)
Ua va'ai, va'ai atu i tai ua atagia le masina i le malu o le sami.
(as we gaze cautiously out into the ocean, the moon reflects off the calm sway of the sea.)

Ona o le alofa o le tatou matai i le lagi, ua agi malosi lea o le matagi, ma ua tafefea va'a i le sou o le sami
(Because of the love of our Messiah in Heaven, the calm seas tranformed to a raging storm. The foreigners battleships were detroyed at sea.)

VERSE 4

Ua fa'atumulia le faga i va'atau tetele.
(The harbour was filled with big battleships.)
O latou taupulega o le a taunu'u.
(Their conquering about to commence.)
Ae o le fa'atuatua o le tatou talita,
(But with our faith in our shield)
e pei ona fa'aalia i le afa. Sou! Sou!
(The storm revealed its power. Rage! Rage!

The Hu, Bloodywood, Shepherds Reign. I love that no matter how many years go by I can still find amazing metal bands from all over the world randomly through youtube.

Sometimes, just sometimes, the YouTube algorithm blesses you with some gold, top tier stuff. And today, it delivered in spades. I didn't even know Samoan Metal was a thing but I'm all for it!

I can't think of anything more authentically metal than Samoan metal. Samoans fed me when I had nothing, kept me company when my demons from war tried to take me, and made me remember that there is something beyond darkness. I will forever be grateful to my brothers who called me "Oos".

Great music! You can hear the sounds of warriors bashing your skull and delivering havoc.

Greetings from Mexico. Our Aztec warriors, Eagle and Jaguar, salute the Samoan brothers.

Shooting a video in the bones of a church which was presumably constructed by your historical enemies, as it's being devoured by the land is as metal as it gets in my book. 🤘

I love Heavy metal, and I think it is so amazing how bands from nations and people groups typically not associated with heavy metal forge their own brand of it. The pride of the people and their culture is expressed beautifully. Will definitely add this to my must-adds

Thank you, friends. What I just felt, I haven't felt since Sepultura and some Scandinavian songs. Tribal singing and metal are brothers. Our roots, the struggle, the never-quit, standing tall and facing whoever, with whatever outcome the heavens may desire, move us in our hearts. Greetings from Costa Rica.

This song I think correct me if I'm wrong is about the mau movement where the saying "SAMOA MO SAMOA!" came from! It means Samoa for Samoa! A lot of nations tried to takeover Samoa but at the end we defeated them all with bravery and courage! 🙏🏾❤️💯🇼🇸

First time hearing of this band. They look so intimidating and badass yet they're probably among the nicest guys you'd ever meet.

Samoans are the most beautiful gentle and yet terrifying people on earth. You never ever want to get on their bad side! If you have a Samoan friend though, you have a friend for life. They are the epitome of FAFO!
