There's no shortage of training materials for aspiring web developers. Thousands of videos, books, podcasts, and other media vie for your attention as a n00b -- but does any of it actually apply to an actual job as web developer? Tonight on the RealToughCandy channel, Chris is sharing his experience of a 'real life' web dev and dispels some myths of what he does at the job.
Chris’ background as a self-taught web developer: 3:24
The importance of finding your web development direction: 6:01
What are you financially worth as a dev? 7:50
The realities of entering the workforce as a self-taught dev: 11:10
Chris’ interview experience as a newbie dev (he gives actual coding examples): 13:00
It’s OK to NOT get the job: 15:00
Do I have a better chance of being hired if I went to X bootcamp or college? 16:00
What goal should I have in mind when building a portfolio? 17:06
I made it to the interview!! Does it have…deeper meaning? 18:35
Practical knowledge vs all knowledge: 20:05
Programming vs syntax: 22:30
What do you actually *do* at a real dev job? 25:04
Do I need to know Bootstrap? 35:00
What dev tools should I expect to use at the workplace? 38:18
What about the workflow and code standards? 42:29
OMG MANAGEMENT AND MEETINGS 48:10
You’ll make (big) coding mistakes. How OK is that? 53:42
I’m coming from a career field that has NOTHING to do with web development. 57:47

Strongly agree with your advice about showing what you can do rather than telling. As a senior dev, all day long I hear from junior devs telling what they can do when it would much much better if they SHOWED it. Great tips.

I hate that I missed this. I was "out of it" around this time of the year. I'll definitely tune in to the next one. Taking notes on this. Been a subscriber to Chris and value his insight, as well as yours. Love the Vintage Toys in the back [my best friends are all Toy Collectors].
