There's no shortage of resources to help people change their health behaviors -- but far too often, these resources aren't accessible in underserved communities, says physician Priscilla Pemu. Enter "culturally congruent coaching," a program Pemu and her team developed to help patients with chronic diseases monitor their health with the assistance of a coach from their community. Learn more about how this approach transcends language and cultural barriers -- and could potentially transform health care in America.

I agree with this talk so much! I was a Health Coach of 100 patients with chronic illnesses. Many of the patients spoke Spanish and just agreed with everything that their medical provider said without understanding what was going on. This is where I stepped in and educated them, helped them build confidence to ask questions, and also write down all of their medications on a medication reconciliation sheet to figure out what they were or weren't taking. I also quickly realized that many of these patients were depressed. Once I helped them focus and get the help that they needed, they were then able to make massive changes on their health goals. I truly miss coaching and want to start up my own health coaching business and utilize all of the skills I have learned throughout the years. It is definitely needed.

Yes!🙌 I suffered for years with autoimmune disease unnecessarily. Through my journey I learned the value of health and things lacking in our current healthcare system which I work in! That’s why I’m a Health Coach. Want to help others navigate the challenges that I faced a little easier and get healing faster!

I have been diagnosed with MS
4 months ago and i’m 22 years old
I always think about starting a healthy diet, but I can't, not because I don't like it, but because I can't buy it. All health products are very expensive. I can't buy them even organic vegetables and fruits are more expensive than regular vegetables and fruits. I have no source of income other than my father, who struggles a lot to save Money to buy my medicines every month. There should be companies that take into account people's conditions, not only tell them to eat healthy food, we want it to be affordable for everyone. Here we combine actions and words together.

I am studying to be a health coach so I can work with chronically ill people because I am a chronically ill person. I'm doing better now but I have spent most days in bed for the last 6 years and I just turned 30.

This video so inspiring with great ideas to work with those who have more time with patients and partner with medical professionals to record and provide visual aids to record progress.

I love this. Your resource tool looks awesome. I identify so much with Ms Bertha in spite of the differences in our ages and conditions. Suppose my doctor prescribed meds and exercise for high blood pressure...but I didn't exercise. The doctor will be cross. I want to dodge the doc.

But I believe I would respond well to a culturally congruent, non-judgy coach. Just recording when I exercised + knowing that someone would look at that was enough to get me out walking 5 days a week for several months.

I'm definitely more comfortable with listening to someone who's dealing with chronic illness, because they'll never really understand how it feels .

I have lupus. 15 years home not work. I see my dr. Once per year. How can I do much or eat healthy with $400 per month. I’m a professional never thought my life would be trying to make it with $400.

Thank you. I find that there are more important factors to confront- such as culture and money, and especially- CRITICALLY, that there are immense issues with access. However, i wanted to emphasize on her comment where there are definitely communities and charities in which offer, share, and donate information on health, food supplies, and other necessities.

Im happy I learned about this at a young age, what with helping out at food drives, taking nutrition courses, and a doctor telling me i was borderline diabetic :) choices!

:'( i need help, my family doesnt believe that I'm sick. I've been dealing with cough for 19 months and other symptoms are starting to show up like, fatigue, dizziness and breathlessness. It's really depressing to be honest. I still dont know what kind of cough this is... my family keeps saying "you'll be fine". And when i try to tell them that there's something wrong with my health, they keep saying im just being negative to myself and im the one making myself sick because i keep thinking about it... i dont know what should i do... they weren't worried and they're not taking my needs seriously like medical check up cause it's really expensive and i understand that... but i guess i have to deal this with myself :)

I'm one of those millions, Alone, chronic illnesses Incurable diseases! It's hard! I don't even have a GP here who could care less ive had a headache going on three months! "He said how much do I smoke? I said 15 cigarettes Truth, he said to quit, " I said "good luck with that!" I've been smoking since 5 yrs old!" He said can cut down too 10 a day I said sure I can do that!
"See you next time" said the Doctor! His intern was way more concerned than him!
So there is a huge shortage of Doctors where I live, like most major cities! I'm in Vancouver BC Canada! What does a person have to do to get proper health care, because desperate people can do things out of desperation! Sad really fucking sad! I could die no one would know it, that scares me. I just turned 59yrs old last week. I've been fighting for my life the past 20+ years! I just don't know how much more I'm able to take, truth!
Thanks for this Awesome Ted Talk! Bravo Doc!
Sending positive vibes your way.
Peace love dream's!🇨🇦
