Here we go guys.

This question has been asked of me many times and I have finally gotten together a list of steps for doing yelling and/or shouting in voice over for cartoons, anime, video games, etc... Let me know if this helps and if you have any further questions.

Cheers.

- Gain is for the actual gain on your preamp. As you know, this is usually related in DB's of gain. It is what increases or decreases the sensitivity of the mic (or what it picks up).
- Level/s, in your case is the output after the processing that goes on in your mixer from that channel. This can be used to raise or lower the final levels to what is acceptable (after the in-line processing done in your mixer). This doesn't include any other side-chain processing or master bus processing that is done before it reaches your interface or DAW.
- The Compression is based on the ratio of signal compression. The dial position doesn't mean much as it's in relation to a threshhold, compression ratio and the drive. So, what we need to see (or hear) is the Compression ratio. Some side-chain processor units like the dbx 286s has 2 knobs. Most mixers have only one.
- As far as I can remember, Audacity will put in a red line where you have clipped.

Fun vid Tim! It's hard to cram so much info into such a short session.

finally, i've found a video that actually EXPLAINS how to yell/scream and make it sound good while not hurting yourself. FINALLY!

This was excellent information. I finally recorded a decent yelled line with that. I still need to get a mixer for that added compression, but I feel more confident I can do it.

If you're willing, I would be curious to see you "actually yelling" with your throat and then see you "yelling" projecting from your diaphragm. You're such a good voice actor that I can't believe you're not yelling!

Thank you for this video though. I have an audition due tomorrow for a sports thing and it's ALL. YELLING. Ya know. For the sports.

If it be God's will, I want to try to make my own anime, so the part about projecting instead of yelling seems like important advice. Thank you.

Lol. Sounds like a lot people out there have had this same need, and we have literally searched out this material. I looked up how to yell but still be funny.

Would you recommend practicing screams in a higher pitch? I'm voicing a character that requires my head voice and it's very difficult to scream as that character without pain. The character's voice range itself doesn't hurt at all. It's only when I try to scream does my voice give out and it hurts.

An alternative to those drops you were using is another industry tried true method called, Nin Jiom - Pei Pa Koa. It's a Chinese cough syrup, but you can also get in cough drop form. Its great thing to use after the session.

Any tips for learning how to scream? I was always told to be quiet as a child and never really learned how to do that and when I do it just sounds like I’m straining
