Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank President Neel Kashkari and former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page addressed the Senate Education Committee Monday, February 17, urging lawmakers to tackle the achievement gap.

"Minnesota has some of the largest education achievement gap by race, ethnicity and social economic status," Kashkari told the committee. "This is not simply a Twin Cities problem. This is a statewide problem," he said. Kashkari described the achievement gap in Minnesota as among the worst in the nation.

"When you see them face-to-face, when you can put a face to them and hear their voices, it is truly disturbing," Page said in referencing his recent reading-assistance visit to an elementary school where 90 to 95 percent of the enrollment were students of color.
