After Pinocchio (Gregory Mann) is accidentally killed by a truck, he meets with the Death Spirit (Tilda Swinton) for the first time.

such an uncanny, beautiful design. the craftsmanship involved in this movie is extraordinary.

Tilda Swanson has such a calm and soothing voice and Death has such a matronly nature.

Death does not get angry at Pinnochio for saying he hated being dead or for thinking immortality was lucky. She let's him decide if being immortal was worth the pain of losing what he cared for.

And even when she tells him the rules of his immortality, she still speaks like a parent. She gently holds up a finger to keep Pinocchio from breaking the hourglass before he realized what it would do and instead of keeping him in his coffin the whole time and even threatening to do so to make death less appealing (possibly because she didn't want to instill fear of death in a child), she says- "You'll stay here with me". Maybe she really would have let him stay right next to her each time.

I think that the horns in the Spirit of Death are a reference to how in the original Pinocchio book the fairy turned into a goat as an attempt to save Pinocchio from the giant fish that had shallowed Gepetto.
