Exploring nuclear ground zero at Trinity Site #shorts #wwii #manhattanproject #oppenheimer #nuclear

Did you know you can visit ground zero of the world's first nuclear explosion?

Today I visited the Trinity Site, the location where scientists from the Manhattan Project, led by Robert Oppenheimer, tested the first atomic bomb in 1945 in the desert of New Mexico.

Here's three fascinating things I discovered at this place where the world was forever changed:

#3 Is it still radioactive? Yes, but not as bad as it was. Radiation is 10X higher than typical background radiation. A few visitors carried Geiger Counters to measure the radiation.

#2 The Trinity monument is a 12ft high lava rock obelisk built in 1965. It's a popular spot for photos and I took a quick selfie before exploring the rest of ground zero.

And the #1 most fascinating thing at ground zero is Trinitite, the name given to the greenish glass formed where the heat of the bomb melted the desert sand. You can still find pieces of Trinitite at Ground Zero.

--------------------------------------
I want to add that I know this is a sensitive subject (politically, ethically, etc). This video isn’t about that. It’s simply an appreciation of an incredible work of physics (and other disciplines) as part of the Manhattan Project during WWII and a visit to a place that changed the world forever.

--------------------------------------
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving LIKING and SUBSCRIBING to my channel. I want to share my joy of the outdoors with you. I hope that you are inspired to get outside and enjoy nature too. Thanks!

1. Go to ground zero
2. Sneak out some green rocks
3. Make a thing that goes boom
4. Watch

Open to public on limited basis. It is part of White Sands Missle test facility which is still active.

Hopefully the Oppenheimer movie will bring more attention to the area.

I used to live right down the road. San Antonio New Mexico. Thanks for bringing back memories.

I read a couple of books on Openhiemer. To say intelligent is an understatement, he and his cohorts are among a few who truly flirted with disaster, they WAY underestimated the beast they invented. ✝️🇺🇸

There’s also remnants of the tower that the bomb was detonated on

I’ve been to White Sands
In the 60’s you could still find huge chunks of really thick glass

Unfortunately White Sands just announced that they will not be open for a spring visit this year (2024). They are still having the October visit open, though.

I misread the title as Exploding nuclear ground zero, and got excited.

“It’s still radioactive”
Me: Not gonna risk it

Insane that it’s still 10 times more radioactive then normal 78 years later.

I swear my home entertainment system has more wires all over than that gadget. It'd be fascinating to know what all those cables do. All the manpower and knowledge that went into the project is amazing.

10x radioactive than background radioactivity.
Great idea, let's go hangout there all day!
