If you make your x-y-z framework out of cardboard rather than wood, it may be possible to hold a wooden ruler (vector) against one of the planes using magnets. If this works, it will still allow you to move the vector to any position that is still co-planar and it will free your hands to hold another vector and a sheet of paper representing the new plane. Wishing you well from the other side of the world (If you were a few hundred miles south west of Perth.)
