WEBINAR DESCRIPTION:
Dr. Barbara Morrongiello (University of Guelph) introduces ALTER, an evidence-based approach to improving the home-safety practices of parents of children under 6 years of age. The presentation includes: an overview of the ALTER program; a discussion of how to apply this in working with parents; a review of materials available to support effective implementation; and mention of some tips on how to address questions and challenges that might arise in delivering this program to parents. The program offers materials to address a variety of types of injuries (e.g., falls, burns, cuts, poisoning, choking, dog bites, gun-related risks) and some of these materials will be demonstrated during the presentation.
PRESENTER:
Dr. Morrongiello holds a Canada Research Chair in Child/Youth Injury Prevention. She has a long history of research aimed at identifying effective ways to reduce children’s injury-risk behaviors and to promote parents’ home-safety practices. She has published over 200 articles, has Fellow status in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and the Royal Society of Canada, and is an Order of Ontario inductee. Her injury prevention programs have targeted to reduce fall-risk behaviors by children on playground (Cool 2 Be Safe program), improve sibling supervision (Safe Sibs program), increase supervision of children by parents in drowning-risk situations (SAFER Near Water program), promote safer street crossing behaviors in school-age children (Safe Peds Virtual Reality training program) and improve parents’ home safety practices (Supervising for Home Safety - ALTER program).
