If we know the probability of an event, we can determine the odds in favor, or the odds against, the event.

○ The odds in favor of E are found by taking the probability that E will occur and dividing by the probability that E will not occur.

Odds in favor of E=(P(E))/(P(not E))

○ The odds against E are found by taking the probability that E will occur and dividing by the probability that E will occur.

Odds against E=(P(not E))/(P(E))

The odds against E can also be found by revering the ratio representing the odds in favor of E.

Q1. You roll a single, six-sided die.
a. Find the odds in favor of rolling a 2.
b. Find the odds against rolling a 2.

If the odds in favor of event E are a to b, then the probability of the event is given by:

P(E)=a/(a+b)

Q2. The odds in favor of a particular candidate winning an election are 2 to 5. What is the probability that this candidate will win the election?

in part b of question 1 you said "the odds of winning are 5:1" shouldnt it be "the odds of losing are 5:1" ?
