Google Instant Launch Event

On September 8, 2010, Marissa Mayer and Ben Gomes hosted a search event at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to announce Google Instant. Check out this video from our event.

This seems really focused on a major brick wall in net neutrality IMO. If it flies, the top $ wins in every search result typed in, or even partially typed in. The benefit to the end user is finding things faster, but not necessarily showing all the options to allow them to make their own decisions. Google really needs to take a step back and look at the implications rather than the dollar signs of this project.

@LordOfTheToads With all due respect, Google isn't made for the advertisers, it's made for the users. In essence to give users more relevant results. If you aren't getting enough traffic after the Instant-rollout, you need to change your advertising strategy.

I can relate to their presentation. A lot of you say its boring, but to a developer, every feature has pain staking effort put into it.

Developer: "When you click on the text input field some ajax is lazy loaded that will monitor key presses, pass the character string to nlp code and an n-gram database, find the closest match, then take the match, query the datacenters and return the results dynamically into the search container"

Everyone Else: "So when i type in the search results show fast!"

This will change the way people surf and the way people in the industry set keywords for optimization. The change that this will create in peoples search behavior will create less browsing on the web, creating a more exact search with less shopping.

Instant search is obvious... its common in many programs and OSs. However no-one ever thought that huge search engines like google could process data this fast with todays tech and tech costs. Congrats google!

Yes you can actually. First, make sure you have cookies enabled in your browser. Go to the google homepage and find the Preferences at the top right. Go in the preference and turn off google instant and save your preferences and google instant will be off. If you delete your cookies, Google Instant will turn back on and you'll have to do that again.

@Sydwayman same to me they should try it a lot more and put a button to decide eternaly if you use instant or not i guess not much people will use it

Most of searches contains more than one term. For exemple "South American Soccer Cup 2010". As one is typing the words, Google Instant gives a feedback. It feels like being interrupted before you even had the chance to say what exactly you are looking for. It's terrible. And you guys from Google just set Google Instant as default configuration, so when users set their preferences to regular Google search engine, if they erease their History and Site Preferences, Google Instant gets back.

hi google, there is alot of complaints about Google Place. Genuine businesses are affected by the verification and rejection because of the messed up quality guidelines. Can your staff at least entertain those poor souls there?? It seems like majority of the sufferers are facing the same problem.

@RussLi1993 What some third part bing applications allowed you to do is not the same thing as this. Showing results letter by letter is NOT the same thing as predicting what you are most likely to type, aka instant.

They need to make it so that when you're searching in the address bar in Google Chrome it does Google Instant. At least when you've just opened a new tab.

At least Canada can choose com over ca to see this work. But really, why aren't we included automatically while you're scrambling to include Britain, Russia, etc. We're neighbours.

Google Instant is going to change the way people search therefore changing the way webmaster create keywords for SEO
