"stay down, man" (lyrics)

nightclub parking lot south of L.A.
the end of a long night at the end of a long day
the warm wind blows and the palm trees sway
you've had that shitty look on your face all day
i should have known this night would end this way

stay down, man
if you get up again he'll probably kill you
stay where you are I'll go get the car and we can go
but I swear to god i'll leave you here to die
if you say one more word to that guy

nightclub parking lot south of L.A.
the end of a long night at the end of a long day
the warm wind blows and the palm trees sway
somebody called it in the cops are on the way
i should have known this night would end this way

stay down, man
if you get up again he'll probably kill you
stay where you are I'll go get the car and we can go
but I swear to god i'll leave you here to die
if you say one more word to that guy
if you say one more word to that guy
if you say one more word to that guy

Caramba.

Heard Todd Snider talking about how John signed you. Now I am hooked too.

The Boy Genius cover of this sad tune reduces me to tears every time. It immediately brings back a buried memory form nearly sixty years ago. Brilliant. Sir, I am now a major fan.

Dan this is Fire!
I stopped paying my spotify/apple music subscriptions and honestly forgot all about you
rediscovering you tonight has made everything okay for a bit.

Has a twisted Randy Newman quality to it - great song

The art in this video is very cool. Kind of minimalist I guess. I like it. Good song too.

😂You change the location to Lubbock, Tx., and I think I’ve said those same exact words some 20 years ago. I’m a yankee from Michigan and we were working down there...I couldn’t take that guy anywhere!

Dan, this story is identical one told by my older cousin back in the 60’s...a bar tender had knocked him and his sister’s boyfriend, Johnny, to the floor...Johnny kept getting up and being knocked down again..my cousin said my mama taught me “don’t keep getting up!”

I live in rural Riverside county, about 60 miles east of L.A. I seem to know a few guys like this whose mouths write checks their asses can't cash.
One guy ended up floating in a local lake after he put hands on the girlfriend of one of my neighbors. The dumb ass neighbor didn't use enough cinder blocks, so he's doing all day in the pen now. His brother's a pretty good guy, I buy weed from him sometimes. Too bad he wasn't home when this happened, he'd have been the guy singing this song and stopping his brother from doing something stupid, again. The rest of us don't miss him.
I do miss "Rattlesnake Bill" though. He was a blacksmith who lost an eye in an accident while shaping red hot iron (while drinking). He had his old truck rigged up to covertly dispense booze while driving. He filled the windshield wiper fluid tank with vodka or 'shine, but he replaced the original tubing with longer, new tubing that ended under the steering wheel. He could put that end in his mouth and hit the button to squirt "wiper fluid", then hide the tube so he never got caught with an open container.
Sadly, he had to move back home to Oklahoma so his family could take care of him after his accident in November 2016. He and some friends were partying to celebrate the victory of his candidate for president. There were fireworks, and by "fireworks" I mean they were shooting guns in the air. Bill went to his truck to grab his shotgun to join in the festivities. He pointed the barrel towards the ground (safety first!), but had his finger on the trigger. He blew off his own foot and had to have his leg amputated just below the knee.
I miss Rattlesnake Bill, he was a great storyteller and colorful character, he was half a bubble off plumb, but a kind person.
