My mother died in intensive care

When I got the feeling somebody wasn't there

The doctors said she died that night

I looked up death in the dictionary one day
Just to see what the dictionary had to say
It's the complete and irreversible cessation of life functions
Which is not very poetic but it's precise and clean
And if you analyze it what that means is
When they're gone, they're gone

One of the most foreign things about death to me that I still struggle wrapping my head around is how when they pass away and their soul leaves the body, their body just becomes another inanimate object in the room. I lost my lab a few months ago and I was with him by his side the entire time - I was so used to him lifting his head and looking at me or opening his eyes when I hugged him, but not this time. His eyes remained closed, his head remained on his soft dog bed and his belly was no longer rising and sinking - that was the moment I realized he was gone for good and he’s not coming back. Death does not forget. I’ve lost family members but for some reason losing my dog was the hardest hitting loss of ever.
