A trick to twisting wire is to strip the insulation but leave it on the wire. Twist the insulation and it makes perfect twists as it has encapsulated all of the wires so no "stragglers" are left behind.

I love the bit where he pushes the faceplate on and then retightens the terminals just in case the movement loosened them.

A trick I was taught with stranded wire is to use strippers to only partially shift the insulation (leaving say 10-15mm of bare copper), then you can twist the wire using the remaining insulation. Easy to spin between finger and thumb, giving a nice tight twist.

As a Norwegian, I cringe at so many parts of the electrical systems in other countries. Nobody knows what a ferrule is, spring clamp terminals are heresy, and the sockets are either really unsafe, or really safe out of necessity. I'm sure other countries are comparable or better than here, but the British plugs are so unnecessary when shuko has all the same safety features other than the fuse and switch, and when everything is properly protected with 2-pole fuses on radial circuits(with individual earth protection on newer installations) and not on a ring circuit, there's little reason to have the extra protection. To me that's more than enough to save the amount of space you lose with a British plug compared to schuko.

This would be a very well done wiring job for a 12V system on an RV. Top notch.

We used to get our knuckles wrapped if we twisted conductors with pliers but I was in college about 40 years ago

Ok, is that allowed in the UK? In Austria it is forbidden to twist stranded wires like in the Video. It is especially forbidden to lay it dubble and use it in srew in Terminals. We have to use ferrules or push-in Terminals or a not stranded wire.

Definitely better than what we have in Canada and USA.

to twist copper easily, just strip about 10-15mm longer than what you need and pull the insulation almost all the way off - leaving that 10-15mm of copper still inside insulation, then twist it with fingers holding that insulation - that acts as a good grip. This gives a very nice, even twist on cable, then trim twisted copper back to required length. Small offcuts of strands stay contained in the insulation, so less mess.

Thank you for retightening the screws. People don’t realize when you push it in a box or push your wires back in a panel if you turn the screw it’s goes more. Always snug them when pushing wires around after landing them

I actually saw the worlds finest socket in a corner of the tourist section of Buckingham Palace. Asked the tour dude about it. He asked one of the cleaners and it was pure gold plated with a 120 and 240v Variac.

Good conduit practice does not require an extra earth at the socket.
Called me old fashioned, but our continuity through conduit and trunking was top class, even proved via the testing of an high current meter.

Being an American electrician I do like some of these techniques. I really like the switched receptacles. Nice work .

Guys listen:
It’s not just a screw in that terminal, it’s a cage clamp. It’s designed to take stranded wire directly without ferrule sleeves/ tips. It’s also not fine stranded, it’s thick stranded wire that acts more like solid core. For fine and ultra fine stranded wire, a ferrule is recommended.
The metal conduit and metal socket is normal for industrial use when extra strength is needed. It’s all earthed and RCD protected. You are allowed to use single insulated wire in earthed metal conduit.
They’re using basic tools in the video but obviously that’s just for show. Electricians carry the proper tools including power tools. Really you should use a torque screwdriver to make sure the screws on the socket are tight but not too tight.

i knew this was going to be a UK / G-type socket from the title... not just "one of" the finest, probably THE finest/safest socket and plug combo in the world

Incroyable d'être encore en 2023, dans des boitiers et canalisation en métal !!!!

Are these sockets from the 1950s?
I remember seeing pictures of them in books when i did my apprenticeship in the early 90s.
Im so glad we've come a long way since then!!!
