My favourite game of choice these days is the Cypher System. It's incredibly flexible and genre agnostic, so you can run anything. I've been running a planeswalking game for years.

Finally! Someone said it!
Pathfinder is really just a different edition of D&D. Not that it's a bad thing.

I'm currently running Shadowdark (quickstart version) with two 5e groups, and they are all having a blast. We were supposed to just "give it a shot for a couple of sessions" before getting back to our usual 5e campaigns, but everyone is having so much fun that they are demanding that we go another week with it. One group will be entering the 4th week with Shadowdark, and the other group its 3rd week. I can't wait for my full Kickstarted version to arrive.

Savage worlds, call of Cthulhu, blades in the dark, weird West, city of mist, are all just a small number of amazing games. I recommend putting fantasy aside and playing these games.

We've been playing the DeathBringer ttrpg. It's a brutal version of the game, but loads of fun

I fell in love with the Mödiphius 2D20 system - especially the Conan RPG and - same rules - StarTrek Adventures.

It's not as smooth as 5e or Pathfinder (as in, there's more things left to the DM, which in turn means more work for the DM) but it has some awesome mechanics that make it extra spicy in my eyes.

For one (and for all of you barbarian players) Conan comes with a complete set of rules for intimidating / scaring your enemy off the combat. Like, murdering three of their comrades, throwing the head towards the others, and yell blood and murder on top of your lungs - chances are, they loose enough sanity/morale to break and run.

And the other, which makes the game incredibly action oriented: Momentum and Luck (and Doom). Theese are three resources, with Luck is your classic 'sacrifice one of this somewhat rare resource to succeed' Momentum however is generated everytime your dice exceed the needed success. It goes in a group pool everyone can use to have a slightly weaker form of luck, like re-rolling instead of instant success and such. It also allows for manipulation of the terrain (I want to topple that statue on my enemies: Either a somewhat hard strength roll OR 2 points of Momentum)...

Doom is a resource for the DM to throw bad stuff at the players, and I personally (being to nice of a DM) love this feature, as it reminds me that there's still evil stuff I have to do. Also it's just nice flicking those brass coins into my pot of doom everytime the players botch or in lieu of luck and momentum want to retry something important giving me doom :D

13th Age. Not a lot of material out there, but its mechanics ideas are pretty cool.

Das Schwarze Auge or The Dark Eye. Very, very good and rather roleplay-heavy.

Have you heard of Shadow of the demon lord? It seems familliar to dnd, it's more of a dark fantasy setting with a more deadly system

Thanks for this Luke, I love your channel and appreciate your candid approach to everything. I may continue to play 5e, but I won't be giving Wotc or Hasbro another dime. There are so many worthy games and content out there from people I actually like. Love legends and lore and your other content.

Have you tried out Dungeon Fantasy RPG? The customization and combat options are quite impressive.

Played Monster of the week for a little bit and loved it. Players telling the dm what they did with their successful roles is so cool and you get xp by failing. I played as a depressed, short tempered Monster hunter named Scott Henry, and he was scared of clowns. We went to a haunted traveling fair where anyone who entered would stay forever. Scott didn't like this. When Scott got stuck in the mirror maze, he hacked his way out with a machete. The spirit of the fair started yelling at him, so Scott pissed all over the tent in defiance.
