I think for things to become cult classics they have to be unknown generally, but have a lot of redeeming elements to them or be interesting/good but overlooked. What makes The Room a cult classic is that it is so interesting to watch because of the director even if it’s objectively a “bad” movie, but if it was widely popular and oversold itself, then it would just be made fun of and ignored. Megalopolis is like the latter half, it’s oversold and has so many problems that it is a chore to watch. But, maybe in 20 years it will come back, who knows?
