Looking back, Mr. Shue was always kind of mean towards Brittany. She asked for taffy and he threw a few to people who didn't ask for it but skipped the only person who was raising her hands to catch it. Then she looked so happy about being on the Brainiacs and winning until he insinuated that she was stupid, even though she was the reason they won. (That's bullying and she shouldn't have accepted it.)

Yes, the math is wrong, but it's not the wrong answer, just the wrong calculation. He should have written 5000/0.25 instead of 5000x0.25, which does actually give us 20000.
