In this car review video, Jenny does something a little different. She answers some of the commonly asked new car questions we get on our channel. In what is her top 5 must-have features for new cars in 2020.

Even though this question is very much up to individual requirements and we all have different things we want in our new car. But Jenny tries to pick 5 fairly universal essentials when considering a new car in 2020.

A cool infotainment system

It’s 2020 and when we drive our cars, we expect a level of ambient, audio/visual pleasure to enhance our driving experience. You can learn languages on podcasts, hold business calls or listen to your favorite tunes on request plus lots more. So an adequate infotainment system has to be a top must-have for new vehicles. Some of the things we expect an infotainment system to have; a user-friendly, smart interface also with Apple CarPlay Android Auto, a generously sized screen and enabled with safety features like a reversing camera.

Fuel Efficiency

With the price of oil going down people seem a little less concerned with fuel consumption. But don't expect prices to stay low for long, also consider current automotive trends and government environmental targets. For those who can't afford to splurge on an electric vehicle. Jenny recommends a smaller turbo engine. To give performance and a better economy.

A minimum 5 year warranty

No matter how reliable a brand may consider itself, at the end of the day every single car is susceptible to issues. No matter the brand, age or mileage. When something goes wrong, you want to feel the company has your back and not for half the price of the actual car.

Whilst most big brands have stepped up the game and offer at least 5 years. There are still some who offer only 3 so definitely, you need to check before signing on any new car deal.

Maximized Space (The Big Small)

The big small is well illustrated well by the Kia Cerato hatch. It’s listed as a small car but it still has a spacious enough interior and boot.

Reasonable Ongoing service costs
So be sure to check this before making your next new vehicle purchase. Add up the cost of the ongoing service for an estimated duration in which you expect to keep the vehicles. If you think you might service at an independent dealer, make the calls and ask the questions.

But there are of course l plenty of others. Depending on what you will be using your car for. For example, if you're someone who drives long distances every day then certain safety features like adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning would be a must.

1) memory seats as I am tall and my wife is short; 2) adaptive cruise in stop start traffic; 3) lane trace assist or equivalent; 4) AEB; 5) Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

Could have been more specific like digital dash, blindspot monitoring, ventilated seats. Your list can apply to any old car with a new headunit.

I would think that safety features should be at the top of this list.

In my opinion a new car should have rear cross traffic alert, autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist, pedestrian detection and blind-spot monitoring.

A warranty means nothing if the part on a car is a wear and tear item, even door hinges wear so be careful if you are lured by warranties as they aren't worth a cent if the part wears out

Most turbos have terrible long turbo lag.
VW and Mercedes have the least turbo lag.

The funny thing is I've just ordered a Cerato GT. Looks like it's got everything in the list.

In no particular order.
5. Sound System (for those annoying music on a long road trip playing loudly, or songs you can sing along and dance to, to keep you awake)
4. Auto on off LED lights (previous car spoiled me where the lights were on day and night, and as soon as I got out, lights off. Now, shite I forgot my lights on run back, switch off. Run back 5 more time to ensure I locked the car, and yes I heard the remote making the noise.)
3. Economy, and yes if I could afford an EV, that would be my choice. Do more short trips of under 50km round trips max of 100km round trip including driving to work, and occasionally these days take a 200km round trip. Even more irregular as I get older, my long road trips of 2000+km round trips, if I take my oldest sister into consideration the travelling there and back excluding driving around comes to 3000km round trip. So yes, an EV would be fun, as I factor my stops with around an EV's time to recharge to 80% (+-30minutes, bathroom, food and drinks, and stretching every 200 to 250km. My car, my responsibility for our safety, my rules, I'm driving most of the time, or take your car and drive yourself.)
2. Safety for all occupants, especially children, also meaning spaciousness.
1. Comfortable driver's seat and driving position, with all controls within easy reach.
Extra features: Automatic for a blah engine an engine sound, manual for an engine that gives you an engine soundtrack, unless its a drop top making an easy smooth automatic the best option.

Reasoning for my options.
1. 77 year old mom lives with me.
2. My friend's 7 year old, jumps in my car.
3. Children needs space, my powerbank can charge his phone for most of the trips we take.
4. I enjoy automatics, but drove manuals for 21 years with my driver's license.
5. When alone, my backseat becomes my packing space, so luggage capacity never bothered me. Probably why my car looks like a handbag most of the time.
6. Sedans feels saver with the extra junk in the trunk keeping would be rear enders further away, hatchbacks and SUV's practical for loading weird shapes.
7. RWD over FWD, but hey can't afford my Mercedes Benz yet.
8. Dogs and cat climbs in the car. Dogs, take me for a ride human. Cat, leave the window open human, I want to lay in the sun without that stupid dogs bothering me. (6. Would be well put together and durable materials, if I have 6 choices)

I believe many of the features you suggested were rather quality attributes (perks) of owning one and not exactly features. For features I'd take dual zone climate, collision warning, self assisted parking, traction control and a low ration CVT (preferably LVT)

Hi Jenny, long time no see🌹🌹 …I'm really happy with my 2018 Camry Sport & would agree that your top 5 is what I was looking for when I purchased my car. Has all the features I wanted, enough warranty & fuel economy has been surprisingly good. Drive & keep safe everyone 👍✌

Depending on your circumstances, say you live outside the big city, highly recommend you get a full size spare. So many cars these days have space savers or just a puncture kit. Terrible if you're hours away from a tyre shop.

Living in Canada, I won’t buy any car without heated seats and a heated steering. Winter here is treacherous guys! Great review as always Jenny.

Believe it or not, I very much enjoy Honda's HDMI port, so I can hook up things like Chromecast. In my case I hook up Raspberry Pi and can program whatever I want to see on the screen without restrictions. It helps that Honda's safety warning (HDMI turned off while driving) is also easy to disable by a few presses of buttons. It's prolly pretty left field, but I love HDMI port and wish more manufacturers would consider implementing it besides Hondas.
