"Shelby Oaks", the upcoming horror movie released by Neon from Film Critic and fellow YouTuber Chris Stuckmann in his directorial debut (who also wrote and co-produced it) had it's World Premiere at the 28th edition of the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal July 20th 2024.

I was there at the sold out screening and wanted to share a spoiler-ish review with y'all.

Neon clearly bought it coz of Chris' name, that alone could really help sell it, considering there are no stars. Even Saw1 had Danny Glover and Cary Elves.

Pretty much 100% with you. It's an okay film, but I can't wait to see what Chris does next.
I also thought the score was kind of overbearing at times. Like, too loud and, as you said, sometimes not fitting the tone of what happening on the screen. I guess there's still time to remix that before it hits theaters.

Agreed - I’m surprised Neon bought it as well. It isn’t quite what they’ve done in their portfolio historically, but maybe they’re branching out a bit!

You could do worse than have Lake Mungo as an inspiration. It is truly a masterpiece.

Story was decent.
Happy for Mr. Stuckman.
I enjoyed the lead.
I am definitely interested and curious where he will go next.

Neon bought it because it's Stuckmann's film, it was cheap and Stuckmann has 2 million subscriber and if half of them pay to see it in cinema's then theyve got a hit film!!

Phillipou brothers make sense . They were “YouTubers”, but their YouTube channel was always film making . Much different than sitting in front of a camera and doing subpar movie reviews in the most boring delivery possible.

I saw it at Fantasia and I was so disappointed. I wanted to like it so bad. It’s disjointed, poorly written and the “twist” at the end had people audibly laughing. I’m assuming there will be reshoots and edits but idk if they can fix it. The cinematography was good and the lead was great but that’s about it for the positives.

Chris Stuckmann is a scared little girl who wouldn't know what a scary movie was if it hit him over the head.

Chris had 1.4 million bucks that he got through his fundraiser and executive producers, so it's not super low budget like more original and genre defying movies The Blair Witch Project, Duel, Halloween and The Evil Dead for example.
