My 250 cdi had injector issues. Then I filled the tank with Total Fina diesel. They sell only one high grade diesel mix. My car immediately ran smoother and quieter and no more surprise injector problems. Now I only use Total Fina And the car loves it. Now, at 225k km, its time to pull, clean, and re-seat all four. The injectors are fine. Just micro-leaks at the copper seal. I'm going to let mercedes do the work for the warranty and they are really good and thorough.

First off, do NOT use water. If the injector seals (plastic rings around injector) are not tight, the water will get into the engine and start rusting. If you have to check it, use a thin oil.

Is it ok to spray brake cleaner or wd40 into the injector wholes to clean all that crap ? No risk for the engine ?

Water testing, interest idea I'll check that way too. I replaced the fuel lines and smell went away, cleaned up the whole area but after a short drive found diesel fuel on top of one injector. Also today saw a drop come off the front of the fuel pump which is a bigger concern TDI ALH

Actually what he should have done before even removing injector. You take to a car wash and pressure wash top of engine, buy a can of engine cleaner spray on top of head, let it soak for 5-7 min. Then rense with high pressure washer. I owen a MB 300SD 1983 turbo diesel. I perform all my maintence. His method of locating leaking copper ring, is fine, I use a spray can of carburator cleaner.

Can leaky seals and o rings cause diesel to enter the crankcase?

I got diesel coming out of all of mines..i guess the seals aren’t good on them anymore..
