Let's take a walk around my northern NJ garden in early May. In my zone 6 garden we see many perennials in a pre-bloom state: peonies, Sweet William, Canterbury Bells, day lilies, oriental lilies, Asiatic lilies, clematis, lupines, Lady's Mantle, liatris, brown eyed Susans, black eyed susans, crepe myrtle, Maltese Cross, Oriental poppies, Princess Victoria Louise Poppies, soapwart, lavender, blanket flower, lavender, catmint, peonies. The lilac bushes are blooming now and giving off a nice fragrance. Johnny Jump-Ups, rockcress, Phlox and Basket of Gold Alyssum are in full bloom.

There are black eyed Susan varieties that are true perennials even in very cold areas. They will bloom every year and can be divided over time so you will have lots of plants. One I like is Rudbeckia fulgida "Goldsturm." Love your garden tours.

I like the red cedar. I've been adding some native shrubs to my perennial garden to add texture and different height/shape. Also adds refuge for birds and winter interest. We have birds nests in a few cedars and they return each year🙂 this year I added more Maltese cross and liatris cylindraca which the butterflies were all over last year! Love watching your tours ✌️🇨🇦
