Principle of Moments: Varignon's Theorem Example

Показать описание
Static analysis in 2-dimensions often requires the calculation of the moment created by a force vector around some arbitrary point. In this video, Dr. Garrett Love provides an example application of Varignon's theorem.

Do note a calculation error at 7:33. A common error in applying Varignon's theorem is to forget to reverse components, which unfortunately happened in the example! (swapping the horizontal component of 6/5 N with the vertical component of 8/5 N). There is a verbal explanation at 7:58, and the correct moment around the pivot point should be only 15 N cm.

This video was created for classes in the department of Engineering and Computer Science at NCSSM.

why do we have to consider moment caused by the weight of the block? doesn't the moment caused by weight get cancelled by the moment caused by normal reaction of the surface?
