I have a counting question similar to this except we are assuming sets can have repeated numbers. We want to know the number of non-empty subsets of {X, X, X, Y, Y, Y, Y, Y} where order doesn't matter (i.e {X, Y} = {X, Y} even if they are different elements in the set)

Can a set with braces{} have repeated elements? And a set with parentheses?

I think you are telling number of subsequence. Sets can have elements in any order .
1, 2 will not have 4 subset .
It will have 4 subsequence and 5 subsets (Including 2, 1)
