How to yarn over (yo) in crochet

The yarn over (abbreviated yo) is one of the basic techniques in crochet. When you're just learning, it can be confusing to remember which direction is right way to yarn over. Remember that you need to go OVER the hook, not under it. Another way to think about this is that you need to push the yarn away from you with your hook, before grabbing onto it.
