Being under an overpass in a tornado is absolutely not lucky, that’s one of the WORST places you can be. It can create a wind tunnel and have stronger winds than outside of the overpass.

While riding my motorcycle cross country I got caught in a hail storm between Sterling, Colorado and Fort Collins, Colorado. I was wearing a heavy leather jacket, gloves, and helmet. There were no places to take cover out in that country. Luckily I came across a ranch house just off the road. The family gave me shelter. They even made me a lunch. The underside will protect you from debris, but underpasses and the like actually ACCELERATE wind speeds. for smaller tornadoes it may not be bad… but for very violent tornadoes, it will be incredibly dangerous. Your best bet for safety is a small hole or hill to cover in or behind

I had a dust devil which had formed over the baseball field I was walking past cross right in front of me. I stopped to watch it pass, and when it hit the side of the road I was on it dissipated as it smacked into a phone pole. It was as high as the pole and surrounding trees, not insignificant. This was just south of Seattle, of all places. It gets quite dry in western Washington in the summer time, we've even had water rationing.

Definitely do NOT take shelter under an overpass during a tornado. The wind tunnel effect actually makes the winds go FASTER under there and it's more dangerous. It also can clog roadways and put other drivers at risk. That's the worst place you can be.

The last place you want to be is under a bridge when a tornado strikes. It amplifies the wind speed. Bad idea.

The worst thing you could when taking shelter from a tornado, is to go under a bridge. The wind speeds actually increase when passing through confined spaces such as bridges.
