Professionals recommend sealing slate and grout. And if you want the glossy or wet look to slate it must be sealed. At least this is what I am reading on all the professional flooring websites. The contractor should do it

What??? I have slate in my shower, and I wipe and clean with a liquid detergent 1 a week and it does not work. Wiping them dry after each shower helps a little bit because the slate is so fragile, I don't want to leave water on the shower floor.

Probably the worst video I've ever seen. You don't do any polishing whatsoever. The video should be called: “How to wipe tiles clean with a sponge and warm soapy water.” Then we can decide if we want to waste 1.28 minutes of our lives watching the most obvious video ever.
