A friend's girlfriend once made a black forest cake for a mutual friend's birthday, and she added so much liqueur (after cooking, it was soaked into the sponge) that people started getting tipsy. I've wondered ever since if that was a mistake or if Germans are just really hardcore when it comes to baked goods...

One of my biggest pet peeves is when people think a red velvet cake is just a dyed chocolate one, they're two completely separate desserts and have different recipes. Red velvet cake is made with butter milk and was so named before any dye was traditionally added to it due to a chemical reaction in the batter that gave the cake a red hue

I'm also gernan and i actually like your take on the black forest cake. If i sold this at a café i would maybe call it "bfc inspired" or "modern bfc" on the menu because it's not the traditional cake people would expect. But it's not like there's only one right way of baking a bfc.

So, baking a sponge cake takes experience. Making a good buttercream takes practice. Finding sour cherries can be a hassle, because cherries are a notoriously difficult crop... So maybe people are doing their best with their combination of skill and ingredients?

That cake is so beautifully decorated. I personally don't like Black Forest gateau but I would love to decorate any type of cake like this.

Having been to the Black Forest in Germany (we also have a Black Forest in Colorado) and I've had Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte from a restaurant there, it became a major pet peeve whenever someone made a cake and called it a black forest cake just to be the excessive sweetness that is the Americanized version.

Thank you for the explanation. I had tried making a black forest cake and wondered why it wasn’t as good as the one from my local German bakery. I think the only thing I did do correctly was use real, fresh cherries. I’ll have to make a true black forest cake now :)

As an austrian, this isn't a black forest cake either😂 the decorations kind of is important too (it is supposed to be Schwarzwälderkirschtorte for all the germans here)

We also don't use cooked regular cherrys but sour cherrys such as "Schattenmorellen". Never saw a recipe that told you to cook the cherries.

I LOVE all versions of b.f cake.
I found b.f.c chocolate in France once, can't find it anywhere again and I'm a little obsessed 😂.

no offense but I have to agree with some of the commenters, in my experience real Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte needs to have it's cake layers soaked in Kirschwasser, a type of alcohol. of course there are kids versions, but those aren't the real deal.

My mum adores Black Forest, her number one guilty pleasure. Would sell her first born (me) for a good one 😂 the amount of times we’ve been caught out by fake ones is insane. So hard to find a good black forest cake, especially without alcohol.

Creators really out here gatekeeping food now these days instead of letting people cook the way the want to. I guarantee anyone who's going to the trouble of making a black forest cake, and isn't German with an interest in baking, has probably just looked up a recipie and made it with the closest ingredients they could find if they don't get a hold of the traditional stuff.

It's pretty rude to just flat out say "hey everyone doing this is wrong" instead of encouragement and acceptance that around the world people will make things differently, and that using sweet cherries instead of sour because you couldn't find them means they shouldn't call their cake a black forest cake. They've attempted to create a dish with what they have at their disposal, and having been a chef, albeit not a baker, for fifteen years, we need less toxicity in that environment, not more.
