Tummy Time for Newborns - What Every Parent Needs to Know

Tummy time for newborns can be challenging for any new parent. There are a ton of questions that pop up like - when should I start tummy time? How long should I do it for? How often? What if my baby gets upset? And the list goes on...

Sadly, sometimes the challenges that arise when parents first attempt to do tummy time exercises with their newborn lead to them avoiding tummy time or giving up completely. However this often leads to developmental delays, and potentially other issues like plagiocephaly and torticollis.

But newborn tummy time doesn't have to be unpleasant for you and your little one! In this video you'll learn when to start tummy time with your baby, how often to do it for and for how long, plus what to do when you baby gets upset when you attempt tummy time. And there's also a lot more :).

I created this video to be your guide to tummy time for your baby.

So straight out the womb my baby girl has been lifting her head. She was born at 38wks 3 days. She is now 3 wks old and today she fully lifted her head steady for about 30 secs. We just started tummy time a few days ago 🤗

I’ve started tummy time for my baby at the right time because of you. And for that, thank you! I’ve seen the benefits of it. He is hitting his milestones of sitting and standing up and I’m just so amazed.

My 3 week (almost 4 week on Monday) newborn loves it. He has been trying to raise his head since 2 weeks!

60 mins seems like a challenge. Since my 3 month old is very hungry when she wakes up and then if I wait for 30 mins, it’s almost time for her next feed, since she has quicker bowel movements. I am able to do 15 mins max on certain days.

Very good video, thanks for sharing this valuable info. However as a psychologist and teacher that does research in neuroscience I wouldn't recommend using flashy toys to "entertain" your baby. These kind of toys affect kids attention and concentration in the long run, creating addictions. Using any other toy that is not electronic would be better. Even just the mirror option is enough :)

Thank you so much for such amazing tips. My little one is now 4 months and was 3 months premature so is a little behind in his motor development. But these tips help to give us options as tummy time is not his favourite. But he loves playing while he’s on me so we do his tummy time on me a lot of the time. He also loves side playing so we do that as well to help strengthen his back/neck. We shall get there eventually 😊

Emma ♥️ I'm most amazed on how you broader and evolved the content of tummy time through time.
I've seen every single tummy time video from you and this is by far, the best.

happy that you ear people's comments and adapt to the parent's needs, I'm pretty much enjoying and adapting my newborn to your content also.

keep it up !

In the Caribbean we don't have tummy time. The baby is always on their stomach... I literally heard about tummy time 2 years ago. I find it strange that this is even a thing.

My baby enjoys it. I started 30 seconds and now its 5 minutes easy. He seems to enjoy it. He's almost 2 weeks old now.

i have introduced tummy time with my baby since she was two weeks old but she never like to do be on tummy even now when she is almost 4 months old. each time she cannot do more than 5 minutes. we have tried different props, different position (eg on leg, on pillow, football hold). Even a chest-to-chest she never like it because she just doesnt want to rest her head but keep tilting up her head with leg kicking and then she will get upset easily. I do not know why she just doesnt want to rest her head be it lying on the floor or on my chest. the only "tummy time" that works almost all the time is when i put her into a carrier and go for a walk. Again, she will be upset once i sit down to simulate the chest-to-chest position

Our burp sessions are essentially tummy time. Reclining her slightly forward or into our shoulders, she is a little bobble head. Our hands are always nearby to support if she throws her head back.

My baby sleeps most of the time. She wakes up, feeds, changes diaper and sleep. Most of the time she is asleep while feeding. How can i give her tummy time while sleeping?
