How To Change Your Brake Pads Or Brake Blocks

Replacing your brake pads on your road bike is not a particularly difficult task, but is key to ensuring that you are safe on the road.

Changing your brake blocks is a pretty simple task. To know if they need changing, simply look at the grooves in the pads, which are wear indicators. If there are no grooves, they need changing! It's also worth changing your pads if you're doing a long ride with lots of descents - in bad weather you can get through a set in a day.

It appears sliding in new brake pads after removing the screw and tightening it is all that is necessary. Are any other adjustments often required? My brakes work fine but the front pads are about worn away. I'm trying to find out more before replacing the brake pads.

Should you change both front and back pad at the same time or just which ever is worn !

Just deglazed mine. Useful video thanks but I ended up removing the entire brake block housing as I found the first grub screw easily rounded off.

Didn't you just put the right hand (R) pad into the left hand receptacle? Also, what's the reason for the fins on said caliper?

I've restored a old road bike, and I have new wheels an single pivot calipers, I know they are not excellent brakes but they do not brake! I've assembled everything clean and without a trace of oil or grease, everything is properly adjusted and the levers are smooth when I press them, even in the drops with all of my strength it takes a long time until it stops. My question is, do the pads need to seat on the rims first before braking better? Or maybe the pads are shit(probably they are too, but with the old steel rims, worn pads and suicidal levers the bike used to brake a lot better)?

To be honest, if you've got oil on your disc brake pads you're a bit stuck. There is a Muc Off product that's pretty good, but pads are pretty porus and absorb oil like nobody's business.
I generally swear at myself and buy new pads if I do get oil on my pads. :-(

Could you guys do a video how to become a better timetrialist? Tips from professional riders would be nice (Wiggins, Martin etc.) Aerodynamics is important in timetrial, but there is already video about it. Timetrial is not that simple and i know that you guys know about it more than me, so it would be a helpful video =) (sorry for bad english)

Dan, those brake shoes aren't backwards are they ? On 105 brakes the shoes should have the closed end facing forward to stop the pad from pushing out when you hit the brakes. In this video it is only the grub screw that is holding the pad in which is dangerous. The pad normally is removed from the rear. I could be wrong, maybe this is a different type of brake.

Hey I have avid disc brakes at the moment and I'm thinking about getting some shimanos
Will the brake thing where the brake pad sits. Fit in the calliper I already have on the bike?

Soak in degreaser for a good period of time. If it doesn't work, burn them under a naked flame.
I'm yet to buy new pads because of contamination of products...
It may void some sort of warranty though... I refuse liability when you burn your fingers!
