Acoustics and Sound Control in Mass Timber Buildings

Acoustics. Sound control. Noise pollution. Regardless of what you call it, designing the wall and floor/ceilings within a building for good acoustics performance (i.e. blocking the amount of noise that can travel through them) is a critical design process. In this video, we take a look at how sound performance metrics of assemblies - STC and IIC - are tested; we look at how these values compare and what types of buildings would target different ranges; and we discuss the unique aspects of designing mass timber assemblies.

I have seen on The Build Show with Matt Risinger sand used as a filler in-between floors Europe for sound cancelation and thermal mass. I recommend checking it out.

Do you think a 5 ply clt would be expectable by itself (other then good isolation and sealing at the wall connection) for a single residency floor system? I know this is subjective but would love to hear other's input.

is it possible for you to include which buildings you use in the videos?

Could you devote a serie of videos on Components?

one thing that isn't taken into consideration in a residential mass timber structure is, subjectivity.
each person will react to sound in entirely different ways or what i like to call the irritating factor .😂
i've built two mass timber private houses for my wife and i and im the irritated one .
. of all the different methods that were tried in both house none were to my satisfaction .
my son in law was a mass timber engineer for the Nur Holz company in Rombach germany and they tried numerous approaches to the ceiling floor issue but none were really satisfactory to their clients . i suggested to erect all of the first floor walls, put in a t&g wood ceiling or what ever the client wants and then install pre cast concrete slabs on top of the walls. Do a pour on the slabs to what ever thickness is decided by the engineer and then finish with wood, tiles or what ever . this should work as it is the standard method for each floor of a cement block house in Germany i've lived in a few of these houses and i couldn't hear anything between floors including walking .

Speaking of sound: when editing your video, please adjust the intro music to match the volume level of your speaking. The Intro music is always so loud that it blasts my ears when I have the sound at a normal level for your speaking.
