10x your practice results (the how and the what)

Do you want to be brilliant at what you do? Well, I once read that all you need is 10,000 hours of practice. That’s the soundbite, anyway: in reality it’s much less simple. But practicing correctly is WAY more important than simply racking up mindless hours of practice time.

In this weeks video I’m going to be showing you how to supercharge your practice time! You’ll also find out why I keep an Ampeg B-15 in my kitchen!

In this video you’ll learn:
- How to organise your practice routine.
- How to stay inspired by setting specific SMART goals.
- Why you should ALWAYS keep a practice diary.
- And why I avoid practicing with tab and notation.

As always, see you in the shed…

Scott :)

Thanks for your lessons. One more important advice: stop watching bass videos too much. Sometimes it replaces entire exercises and I found myself watching your channel for 2 hours with a bass on my neck. That's sad:)
So if you're bass player and you read it - press alt+F4 several times and take your bass right now!!!

Q: When it comes to practicing, what is your biggest frustration?
A: Lack of knowing what to really work and practice on.
Find myself more than often putting my bass away because I practice the same old things and then get bored of them. Hearing you call this out made me aware of it at least!

As a beginner, knowing what to practice (first) would be really helpful.

1. Have specific SMART goals for each practice category
2. Keep a practice diary
3. Approach practice like you’d approach working out (essential practice categories)
4. Record yourself
5. Remove distractions
6. Practice 4/5 days a week
7. Keep yourself inspired (look to the gods of bass)
8. Imitate then Innovate (increase bass vocabulary by imitating bass gods) - transcribe using your ears!!!
9. Make everything a habit
10. Reduce the friction (make it as easy as possible for you to pick up that bass)

Made for reference. Great video. SBL is an insanely great resource for bassists. Any class on SBL will take you to the next level, even the “beginner” targeted ones. I’ve been playing bass less than a year and have taken 2 SBL courses and they are really good

Paused the video because I saw the SMART learning process. I recently had a webinar session held by my work for further self development during these times and guess what they brought up? Yep, SMART. It's great to see how universal this process is, and you can apply this method for virtually every aspect of your life if you want to achieve something! Thanks for sharing this with everyone Scott!

I'm a woodwind player who has yet to even pick up a bass but I sub to this channel because the advice is still relevant and useful to me.

My greatest frustration is not knowing what to practice. I've been playing for 5 years. I feel like I've made great progress, but these days, my practice sessions feel aimless. I enjoy practicing, and I aim to do at least an hour a day 24/7. This video gave me a little push, so thanks.

Is no one really talking about the gorgeous cinematography of this video?

I'm not really a fan of the Ampeg B-15, but I want one now, just to put it in the kitchen. Thanks, Scott!

This is the best advice you can give to any bass player, or a musician in general. That is the major problem with almost everyone. Lot's of information and no guidance. Thank you for the long years of you guidance.

"Never ever put your bass away" I agree. I have my 7 basses sitting out in the open in my basement man cave/music room. That is great advice, but sometimes it's to my detriment. For example, yesterday I was painting a room in my home and went to the utility area in my basement. Guess what room I have to pass to get there? Well an hour later after jamming, I got back to painting. I'm also working on a 1988 Ford F250 pickup truck project I'm bringing back from the dead and I sometimes have to go to the utility room for a tool while working on it. Yep 1 or 2 hours later, I get back to work on the truck. My wife wants the truck running and out of the driveway! LOL!

As for rule #10, that is one thing I like about passive basses -- no need to unplug to prevent the battery from draining. My bass is on a stand, plugged in, and an arm's reach from the chair where I sit in my home office. Playing means flipping the switch on the amp and picking up the bass. From thought to action in under 5 seconds.

I played for many years in cover bands, playing other people's music. I learned everything I know by playing 45 to 60 songs on a Friday and Saturday night for years. I moved, and lost interest because I didn't have a 'band' responsibility. I tried to join another band, but I was not willing to start over. Job and life were more important. I slipped into not playing more and more infrequently. 1 year ago i traded most of my professional amps and speakers for a shiny new P-Bass hoping it would invigorate me. It did not have the desired effect, but I am glad I made the purchase/trade. You struck a chord with 'vocabulary'. I realized quickly that i never really had one, although i could play close to 100 songs at the drop of a hat. I am feeding my brain with what i want to play, and i keep coming back to old R&B/Funk from the 70's. Tower of Power to Funkadelic. I am looking to YouTube for inspriation and honestly have found quite a bit of it with your channel Scott. Thank you.

Thanks for another so simple video but so eye opening. I loved the part of the friction! It happens with me so that's why i am writing a coment. My Bass is in the suitcase right in my bedroom and a lot of times i think "maybe i should practice a bit", but just to think about opening the case, taking it out and then need to put it back in etc, messes with my mind :-) Ok maybe i'm a little lazy :) :) :) Anyways, from now on my bass will be out in my bedroom and i am pretty sure that i will practice a lot more. So nice to know that this is a "real problem" and it's just not for me being a lazy person :) :) :) Take care Scott. See you in the Shed

Thank you for the knowledge you impart. This particular episode is much above the other lessons you have given.
Thank you. I have for many years, which discouraged me from playing, listening to "all " that you needed to know and how to hold, play, approach, etc. If it Feels good, play it !!! No other way around it.
Again, Thank you.
