George Forman was once asked if he feared any man he fought. He said: "One. Joe Frazier 1. I dropped him 6 times and he got up every time. And every time he was looking for me. That is scary."

Apollo's trainer, Duke is not only wise but is clearly the only one there that cares about his well being.

"You think I beat him, the last time? Do you? Huh?" "You got the decision." I love the lack of eye contact. Brilliant scene.

"He's all wrong for us baby."
Now that is some honesty.

The early Rocky movies have such amazing dialogue. Carl Weathers is an underrated talent, that's for sure

"I saw you beat that man like I never saw no man get beat before and the man kept coming after you."= "It ain't about how hard you can hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward."

There is just something so powerful and engaging about that line in this scene. "... and he kept coming after you. we don't need that kind of man in our life." Insanely good writing.

Apollo was the best antagonist because he was a fully formed character, not a caricature like Mr. T, Drago,  Tommy Gunn, etc.  Also, Carl Weathers is just a better actor than these other guys were.

it is absolutely appalling that Tony Burton never received a best supporting actor award. The man put every bit of his boxing experience into his acting and it really shows. Completely underrated actor. RIP

"Man I won but I didn't beat him!" That was such a powerful line because I know it's a lot of great fighters out there feel that way about their counterpart.

"We don't need a man like that in our life" Never a more profound statement.

One of them more underrated and forgotten scenes of the Rocky franchise. Brilliant foreshadowing. RIP Tony Burton.

"He kept coming after you." Words to live by man. Keep answering the bell and life will be all right.

Always loved Duke. From "He thinks it's a damn fight" to "Let's build some hurtin bombs."

Dude has some of the best lines in the franchise!

"Man, I won, but I didn't beat him!"

Apollo Creed was a champion.

Duke is so underrated in this series. He was the only one who recognized that Rocky was more dangerous than people thought in the 1st film, and he's the only one who recognizes that going after him again is a disaster waiting to happen. He also sees that beneath the arrogant facade, Apollo is now questioning his own worth just as much as Rocky ever did. Apollo is touted as the greatest fighter (a title he did in fact earn), but a random guy picked as a publicity stunt almost took it all away. He knew from the get go it wasn't going to come down to a decision. It was going to be all or nothing for Apollo, and that thought scared the hell out of Duke coming from a man he saw as his own son.

Weathers always played Apollo like a real-life boxing champion, not as a movie champion. He’s stylish, urbane, fearless, and cares deeply about his reputation. And he’s not the “bad guy”. He’s Rocky’s opponent (and then later best friend).

I love how Creeds coach is telling him “we dont want that kind of man in our life” and Creeds warrior spirit is kindled even more. Dudes a true fighter and a technical win will never cut it to him. respect.
