I have CasaOS running on a Pi 4, I do not have a 5 yet. Feature I really like is the file manager + file editor + shell terminal in web browser for local or remote. Still looking for something better with those features, or maybe those features stand-alone in a docker container. Would be nice if I could have multiple browser tabs open simultaneously each with one of those features. It is liberating to have everything available in a web browser so it works anywhere!

I wonder Raspbian 5 is still lighter weight than Umbrel? Rasbpian + Docker/docker-compose + Portainer is so solid and lightweight.

I wanted something like this, thank you

early versions of umbrel wasn't built from the ground up with security in mind. it was always about looks and functionality first in a perpetual beta where security issues would be dealt with later. i never used it for that reason. not sure how they are now, but i'd have second thoughts before using it for anything worthwhile.

Nice review, Don. Better hardware; better software; more fun!

Doing a comparison between CasaOS and Umbrel would be nice. Given that the Pi has less processing power than a full-blown desktop, the better server OS running on it should be as lean as possible to squeeze every CPU workload from the Pi to run what matters: the applications — be they run as containers or otherwise. Is there another server OS that does nothing but running containers? Can a container manager such as Portainer run baremetal?

Thanks for your work but I realize better way it use n100 mini pc because RP5 dosent have hardware acceleration for trans-coding video.

Or you can just install Portainer and use that to manage your docker container as Portainer is supported.

I’ve got CasaOS on my RPi5, running “Crafty console controller” . Yes there are issues, like upgrading CasaOS… but it works and is beautiful. Just not polished.

Umbrel 1.0 is out. Could you make a video on it?

Cool Video, wished you had installed this as a container on a really cheap mini pc with intel N100 using Proxmox and created a light media server for comparison. I belive there's like an Umbrel fork called Citadel as well but haven't really tried it.

Which would you recommend, Casaos or Umbrel?
