The days of carrying useful objects with us on a daily basis has certainly changed over the years. Our pockets and hands once held things that all of us needed to make life a little easier. So, let’s take a look back at a simpler time when we carried many things that did not include a cell phone.

Still carry keys, a knife, wear a watch, carry change & cash & gum. I'm old, but still savvy enough to watch Recollection Road on youtube.

I remember when cig machines gave out a pack of matches with the purchase. Mom's purse was like a survival kit, if you needed it, she had it! lol

You forgot the carrying of a pocket comb. That was back when people cared about what they look like.

I'm 78 and used to be a tour guide at a Living History Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. I wore period clothing and had a pocket watch in my vest pocket, I got more question from school kids about that watch than any of the 29 historical buildings and their contents that my tour covered!!

Quarter for the pay phone? In the 70s, it was a dime.

I’m younger, but I’ve recently started carrying around a notebook/pencil because I believe it’s more functional than getting distracted with my phone all the time! :-)

I carried most of these things at one time or another. Still carry keys, wallet and a handkerchief anytime I leave the house. Notepad and an ink pen were a staple in my 36 years at work! I must be getting old....I remember when a phone call was a dime!

I remember laying on the floor reading the comics. I still carry hankies- I have about a dozen, I also wear aprons. We would always check the phones booths to see if someone forgot their change. I remember all those different brands of gum. oh and the essential wrist watch, I still don't have a smart phone, just don't need it.

I didn't know people DON'T carry keys anymore! I still have my house key, car key, mail key, and a couple more keys on a chain that I have with me at all times

In the 70's my father would come home from work and probably lost 5 pounds emptying his pockets on the fireplace mantle: Wallet, *tons* of change, keys, pocketknife, embossed handkerchief, cigarettes, lighter, Dentyne, 2-3 pens, comb, reading glasses, etc, etc.

Safety pins were always carried. You never knew when you would have a hem fall or button pop.

Most t-shirts don’t have pockets anymore, because most people don’t smoke. But the clothing industry never gave a thought to where we’re supposed to put our reading glasses when not in use. I guess in our pants pocket, so we can snap them in half when we sit down.

My Dad taught me at a very young age "Always have a watch, pen, and pocket knife with you". If you work for someone and are paid an hourly wage, you need to carry a watch. That way, you know when start/ stop time is and you can keep track of how much time you've put in and you don't cheat your employer OR yourself out of time/pay. You also needed a Pen to fill out your time card/sheet or to make notes of what you needed to do for the day. And pocket knives were used for many things.
I still carry all of those things to this day and I'm 67. I've worked with hundreds of people (both old and young) who were never taught this and are constantly asking to borrow a pen, or knife, or what the time is. (even though my 2 Sons were taught this, they never carry any of those items, LOL).

I remember going in to Newberry's or Woolworth's department stores and seeing boxes and boxes of handkerchiefs and how excited I was to have an excuse to buy gloves. Oh, my! But they had long gloves and short ones, some with buttons and so many different colors. Sometimes Momma would give us a cin-cin to freshen our breath.

Loved the look of a pocket watch and a fedora on a Man as it always looked classy 😊

There was actually a time when the majority of adults smoked. A slight majority back when even a doctor's waiting room had an ashtray. Lol.

I still carry and use keys, I couldn't get in the house or drive my car without them. In my pocketbook I have a pocket knife, cigarettes and lighter, chewing gum and of course a little notebook. I wear a watch. I still have a bank account with a checkbook and I carry cash. Today, even though I carry all the necessities one of those items is my cell phone.
