My wild idea for solving the eBay non-paying buyer problem. Would it work? You tell me!

eBay non payment on auctions appears to be running at an all time high. Well I came up with a wild idea that may help curb some this. Do you think it can work? Why or why not?

Great idea…but eBay won’t implement it because it would ultimately lower the number of bidders, thus lowering sell prices. eBay just doesn’t care, they will always lean toward buyers.

It's funny, I just came on here to comment on whatever your latest video was because of something that just happened to me on eBay 15 minutes ago, something you always harp on, the non-paying you know, another video about it, which works with what I am about to say. Perhaps this was in place a few days ago, maybe I missed it but I just put on OBO on a card, it hit me up to select a payment method should my offer be accepted. It doesn't solve the auction issue but you are smart enough and you do 'deep dives' on this stuff so I think you get that this is a first step in the right direction to get us to where you are hoping. It may take time, most companies take forever too 'get there' but this is a step in the right direct, what just happened to me. Also, that is total BS what happened to the guy you mentioned with the Burrow cards, that is also where your idea of buyer feedback comes in to play. A non paying buyer should automatically get a negative feedback, no BS about 'oh, my kid / dog / elderly demented mother slapped the BIN button, nah, a negative, period!

Thanks NEO for also bringing the seller issue up..sellers that cancel an item I've won before I can even check it, and claiming that I requested the cancelation when there was zero communication about it. And then the card is posted again for auction the next day. I've had to report this to ebay at least five times over the last couple months, and I assume it's because the seller didn't get the price they were hoping for. Both buyers and sellers have gotten more sketchy, and eBay can't seem to figure out what to do about it.

If eBay "forces" payment RETURNS would go through the roof...

The lack of autopay is a relic of eBay not initially having their own payment processor. They leaned on PayPal for too long. Love the restocking fee, but it should be 70-30 seller.

Also have to do something about non sellers. To many people putting cards up for auction and not getting the price they want and then backing out this should also not be allowed.

Something must be done for sure. I have had at least 8 non payers in the past 6 months. Not big ticket items but the hassle is real. And the seller inability to leave negative feedback for the buyers is a huge problem I think.

Freezing non payers accounts would help fight shill bidding too. I caught a seller shilling 3 or 4 of his cards, 2 i was interested in. I reported him after a 0 feedback buyer won the same card twice and it was relisted. The restocking fee going half to ebay would stop shilling too

Absolutely the best idea. I want this 💯. I’ve had 6 non payments the last two weeks. Out of the like 25-30 sales. And all of them by people with lots of ratings and 100% positive. It’s crazy.

Why this issue has never been addressed by ebay is really unbelievable!

This is nothing short of an excellent idea. All problems solved this way. I've had a few non payers and it just wastes peoples time and hassle. Not to mention the 2nd highest bidder you lose out on also. I've just had a non payer yesterday, so that's 12 days wasted when I thought it was sold. Repercussions are needed for non payers. Enough is enough....I pay when I win within one minute of winning 99% of auctions I've won. The one time I didn't pay immediately I messaged seller and told him when i was going to pay and I stuck to that.

I like both of your ideas…either one is far better than the current system of zero recourse.

With the price sensitivity of the card market, if someone wins my auction but does not pay, eBay allows me to repost that same listing. When that sells on the relisted posting, charge the non-payer’s payment on file for the difference in price and split that 50/50 between eBay and seller. That would help make amends for market changes and would be a larger deterrent for non-paying buyers. Just another thought.

Appreciate the video! As always, great content!

Ebay used to have a 'restocking fee' which allowed sellers to offer a partial refund if a seller wanted to cancel their order. But that was removed at least 5 years ago.

Think the restocking fee is a great idea. Had someone ghost on a Burrow Mosaic Silver RC PSA 10 where the auction ended Saturday before the Super Bowl. Not only that, I reached out to the second-highest bidder after the 4-day window ended and I was able to ethically cancel. The second-highest bidder’s response was, “well a lot has changed in a week, ” and he offered me 65 percent of what I knew his top bid was that Saturday. This tells me the second-placed guy likely would not have paid either once the Bengals lost in the Super Bowl. This is a real problem. Thank goodness cards are only a hobby for me and I largely reinvest my sales to buy other stuff I want. Can only imagine how tough the unpredictability is for the seller who is actually trying to make a living.

Love the idea. My only issue is then people may pay but then cancel or want a refund after shipping. This all just shows why my slabs is best

There is a simple solution to this problem. All you have to do is have account where you have to deposit and can only bid up to the amount you have in that account. The whole 10% thing won’t work as you can dispute that with a chargeback. The problem is that eBay loves non payers because in the big picture there are so many people that bid on eBay that don’t intend to pay and many times they just drive up the price for those that do pay. eBay knows this and knows that none payers and shilling is a big part of their profits. Before if you had enough unpaid items you would be suspended but they lost so many accounts and profits they figured out that they need non payers ….because they drive prices up. eBay is a horrible company with absolutely no regard for anyone other than themselves and profits.

I like the auto-pay, would save me an extra step as a buyer. Also like the idea of holding an account for payment. I don't understand bidding with no intention of paying, unless it's shill bidding.Flagging them would produce new accounts, but then you could identify them easier by low bid numbers. This affects everyone, buyers and sellers. I've been given the "can't find it" story. Flag them too!

I have sold on eBay for 2+ years with a good size volume and multiple types of items. 99.9% of my non-pays are sports cards.

I'm so over the non-payers. I had some lady offer me $6 on a $7.99 product and I accepted almost immediately due to lack of traffic (just wanted it gone). This person has spent days not paying and ignoring eBay and invoices. Makes NO sense. Why reach out and offer a price that's dollar bills and not pay? Makes no damn sense. Your 10% restocking fee and autopay make so much sense.

By now, we all know that Ebay sees your videos so hopefully they will finally do something that benefits the Sellers for once before we all leave their platform. We need to be able to: 1) leave Negative Feedback on Buyers, 2) Have a 10% Re-Stocking Fee, 3) Lock Non-Payers Accounts from Bidding Or Buying on other items if they have a current Non-Paid Item, 4) Reduce the payment window from 4 Days down to 2 Days, 5) Make all 'Buy it Now' Items have an automatically withdrawn payment from credit card on the account. Simple Solutions. Well Done NEO.
