This is the kind of game where the characters feel like friends and replaying feels like coming home.

The Witcher 3 came out 5.5 years ago.

Gaming is still trying to replicate so many of the things the Witcher 3 did brilliantly, and continues to fail at it.

Few games can make such a strong impact to your life, even change the way you see things. And this one wasn't just a game, it was a whole otherworldly experience, one which you couldn't find a single flaw. Even in 20-30 years time, we'll still consider The Witcher 3 as a once in a lifetime game. Absolutely magnificent!

"What is the technical and precise labor of writing code if not incantation: patterns and processes of logic weaving intricate worlds which like the spells in the Earthsea, depend on the comprehensive naming and ordering of things. And that’s what the witcher 3 represents "
- (Nathan Ditum, 2020)

I've never come across a more beautiful description of coding. Hats off

I have always known that this game was praised by everyone who has ever played it. But I could not give the game a shot myself just because it's not my type of game. But your 'love letter' for this game finally convinced me. I just bought it and I am going to play it tomorrow!

Once I looked up a full quest list on Skellige, turned out I did everything... Every question mark, marker and cave

Never felt so empty after that

I always appreciate Nathan's videos. They come across so genuine and enthusiastic. He can often peak my interest in something I would normally not give a second look.

I love it when Nath and Rob do a passion piece, their quality of language and journalism is so high compared to a lot of YT "thought pieces". More of this please PlayStation Access 🙏

Witcher 3 is one of the most immersive games I've ever played. Most of the time I would just turn off the minimap and roam the world, taking in all the beautiful architecture and landscape. The focus on landscape near the end of the video really resonated with me. Not to bash or disrespect other games, but often game worlds feel somewhat ''designed''. It's like the content was decided on first, and the world was formed around it later. Witcher 3 feels like the world already existed, and the devs just found a way to tell stories in it.

So often we hear the words ''alive'', ''living, breathing'' and ''sprawling'' when open worlds are described, but Witcher 3 is really on another level in terms of world believability and immersion. It feels like there are no copy-paste assets, no copy-paste quests and no copy-paste NPC's. Even when I come across the 100th abandoned house in the world, my mind doesn't go ''oh there's that asset again'', I'm just as intrigued as ever, treating it as if it's completely unique. And often when you investigate there is actually something hand crafted to it, that sets it apart from all the other homes.

Sometimes when a game gets really popular, other games try to copy it. But no game company has been able to copy The Witcher 3. Why? Because it's not the parts that make up the game that made it popular, but how polished, high quality and well crafted each of those parts is. The Witcher 3 doesn't have one particular thing going for it that makes it beloved. People love it because it's one of the most detailed, best written RPG's ever made. You can't copy quality without putting just as much effort into it as the original!

Really great video Nathan, I'll never get tired of hearing you talk about this fantastic game!

A game of such quality that it has basically spoiled me ever since. I'm still not sure it will ever be topped for me. It set the standard so incredibly high, nothing has really come close since.

8:40 the irony here is that the Witcher books never had any map in them and it took the Polish community ages to establish a fan world map.
