HOW MUCH THEY EARN. 1% VS 99%. SOUTH AFRICA’S SALARY GAP EXPLAINED

Stats SA has published new data on median salaries in South Africa, through this data has revealed huge differences between earnings across the country – and that most workers in south Africa earn far less than the average of R25,000 around $1400.

The median salary in South Africa was recorded at only R5,417 a month in 2022. The average salary at the time was R24,813 a month (December 2022).

Now while the average represents an equal distribution among all salaried workers, the median presented by Stats SA shows about half of 13 million workers in South Africa earn below R5,400 a month, meaning most of the earnings are concentrated at the top.

In fact, top 5% earnings carry a higher median of R35,000 $1950 in South Africa – compared to the bottom 5% where it is only R1,000 a month.

The estimates of a minimum liveable monthly income in South Africa for 2024 sits at R15,000 – significantly higher than the average monthly income of minimum wage workers across the country.

Now if you’ve been following along nicely, you’ll understand that there’s a R10k+ gap between how much people are making and what the liveable monthly wage should be. People are struggling. It’s not just you.

How much did you think people were early in SA ? Are you shocked or you already knew?

Man, I literally ran into you today at Sandton City -- I shook your hand and said, "biggest fan!", and I meant it. Keep up the excellent work brother, your analyses are world-class.

This makes me sad. It’s widely accepted that SA has one of the worst disparities with income in the world but when it’s quantified, it hurts. A lot needs to change

Imagine being paid, R1950 or R2350 per month or less than R6000, pure slavery

Dude. You are by far my best follow this year on this app. Absolute best! Well done mfanakithi. Condensed facts that are presented with relevant correlations is no small task. It shows you thought about the data and its meaning. One point. I can't help but think that we are living the consequences of our voting or not voting patterns. Inequality has for decades been highest in South Africa. It's an old problem of Sandton vs Alex. Yet, we allow voting lies and militant rhetoric to play our minds during election season. Badla uSarafina kwa-SABC sidinwe sibavotele futhi futhi futhi. We kinda deserve what we are getting.

My salary lasts 2 days but it's because I lack financial discipline. I'm working on it though and I always prioritize the important things.

Started working 3 years ago and I’ve been spending very conservatively saving as much as I can while I’m still staying at home with even with my estimated salary increase I would have to put down a deposit of R650 000 to qualify for a R1 million place (that’s a two bedroom apartment at best)

Meaning i would have to save about R130k every year for the next five years. That’s R10800 every month. A mind blowing 72% of my current salary.

As a young person I can honestly say to say the future looks bleak is an understatement.

Now can someone tell me how come so many South Africans are driving cars costing more than R10k per month?

No wonder we are not becoming financially free!!!

A lot of people here have been working in a job for 5years, some have been working with their bosses for more than 10 years, You are supposed to be celebrated and rewarded with a well deserved pay-rise and promotion but No!! you are being neglected and never valued. Stop building other people's empire, start building yours today. Investing in the financial market is beneficial and can be an additional source of income if you channel it properly.

My rent is 2k including water & electricity. I minimalize my expeses as much as possible. Our issues specially as blacks is that we wanna look like we made it.

My 5-9pm is data consulting for small businesses after work. I also do this on weekends instead of enjoying free time. My whole salary is taken by debit orders so I survive the month on this money
