Does Food Quality Actually Matter To Your Fish?

‎ There's a lot of debate over what is the best fish food, but in reality, the quality of the food is not as important. Fish farms regularly feed cheaper foods to their fish and still raise healthy and beautiful fish. Cory talks about how the variety and quantity of food may be more important in the long run, and how he sets a schedule for making sure his fish get different foods each day.

Perfect point. Variety is king. Not only for food, but for microorganism, for snails, for bacterias, for plants.

Even though i work for a fish food company, we still recommend feeding other foods for this exact reason. What we may not have in a particular item, somebody else’s flake or pellet might have. Each species is different and its impossible to make a food for every single species out there.

This is also why I've been stocking up on different fish foods lately before setting up my new Juwel Rio 240. I've got some Hikari sachets, some from Sera and I also got a couple of small bottles of Dr. Bassleer since I've heard pretty good things about the foods he's designed. I can also hatch some brine shrimp and there are several places around here where I can get frozen and live foods.

Another great tip can be putting servings of food in pill boxes when you're on holiday and others feed the fish for you.

My LFS gave away some decent quality food to me in the past with some of my purchases. I ended up having quite a few different kinds of food (and blood worms as occasional treats) that I needed to use up. I would alternate between them and my fishes ended up looking as healthy as ever. Made me realize how impactful variety is.

What a refreshing take on the hobby. So often hobbyists and retailers want to push the latest greatest and best of everything. If you only have java moss you don't need the best lighting system and CO2 injection. Add in the fact that many fish are omnivorous and scavengers and you know they're not getting the highest quality food in the wild either. You get what you pay for it doesn't always work out

I always look at the ingredient list. I saw a tank once where fish got only the cheapest of flake food and the tank was covered in tons of fishpoo. This was probably due to the amount of fillers in the flakes. But i definitly agree with you in this video!

For water quality and plants and to fend off algae, quality foods work well for me. I do feed a variety of foods, rotating through ~4 different foods. I do have a small collection of tanks so cost isn't too bad for me (3 tanks in total). 🙃

I feed the crested geckos' leftover :D I put into something else time to time, dry salmon, dry daphnia, flakes or other kind of fishfood, sometimes skip the geckofood. They studently started to breed :DD
I love these honest reaction and opinions of yours! The previous video of the filters also made my day! The hobby really need this kind of critical (and valid) words, thank you so much!

I really like Repashy. It's deceptively convenient. Yes, you need to prepare it, but then you cube it and stick it in the fridge or freezer for two weeks to two months. Very easy, and you can get a huge variety. I also feed pellets, Sera spirulina tablets, and krill flakes - my apistogrammas are constantly spawning on prepared foods alone.

Cory, I purchased a really neat little item that you showcased quite awhile ago . It's a little siphon starter for low tanks called Boxtech BT-600. It works great, but the gray ribbed bulb that you squeeze has gotten clogged and I can't figure out how to remove it to get out the clog. In your video you said you used this product, so I thought maybe you knew a way to unclog it.

Although I think variety is important, I also think it is important to let food not get too old, which means you may need to find a balance between having not too many food around opened and variety, if you have not too many fish to feed😉

"don't believe me, I'm trying to sell you crap" <--- This is just pure gold. Thank you! Here is a like, just for that :D

I bought some small pellet food for my guppies and Betta. Wasn't the best food but I always buy bananas and get a lot of fruit flies, so I easily catch them and feed the betta and guppies. Adding those flies really made the color in the fish pop.

I always look at new foods or different kinds of foods every time I go too the pet store just so I can find what my fish like most but also too see what all they will eat and what makes them grow bigger stuff like that.

Variety, variety, and then variety! Doesn't have to be 10 or 20 food items. Otherwise, Cory summed it up perfectly. I tried doing the high end frozen food and the like. But sticking to just one item messes up their system and causes bloat, swim bladder, lack of appetite, etc. I mix it up between frozen and dry. And I also use the left over "food dust" from my turtle food, krill, and other things and use that to feed to my fish as part of their varied diet. Saves money too! Just mix it up.

Nice quality video of fish in this one! 👍 I feed a variety of brands, types, and textures of food. I do have to say you've got me curious, since you mentioned it, what it'd be like to eat a foot of cheesecake 😛

I'd love to see Cory and Dan (Dansfish) Collab. Either of them visiting the other. Just an idea :)

Hiya Cory, I remember when you advocated feeding fish once a day. Have you changed your thinking on that subject?

I’ve just been making my own fish foods with different, fresh veggies and frozen foods for protein. ☺️👌🏻

They love it!
