if X and Y are both even, then there are odd number of integers. so see "an even and an odd" as a pair, there will be "some pairs and an odd" or "some pairs and an even". I.E. x =10, y = 20, there are total 11 eleven integers. so there are 5 pair of "an even and an odd" and an even.
