What’s in a name? To comprehend what the ultimate prize in football means to the people of Argentina, Eli first needs to understand the country itself. From its origins to its politics, the Gaucho to the pibe, Eli speaks to people on the ground to fully appreciate the complexities of the nation and football’s place within it.

COPA90’s Once In A Lifetime takes an anthropological dive into football teams and their fanbases as they face the prospect of finally winning something.

In this four-part World Cup special, filmmaker Eli Mengem flies to Argentina to follow a country on the brink of ending the 36-year wait for the biggest prize in sport.

What he finds is a story which transcends football, reaching the very soul of a nation that lays itself bare over two fateful weeks. It's a story about Lionel Messi, Argentina and 45 million people looking to reclaim their place in history.

This is the all-angle, on the ground, as it happened, ultimate account of perhaps the greatest football story of our time.

This is Once In A Lifetime: Argentina.

As an argentine, i must say that there is one hell of a difficult task to capture and describe our very unique idiosincracy with such a level of detail and accuracy the way this documentary did. A real masterpiece.

I’ve been fascinated by Argentinian culture for as long as I can remember…then I went there and it multiplied tenfold.
What an incredible place, 3 months there…met some of the most amazing people, saw unbelievable nature, architecture, eat unreal food.
Can’t wait to go back.

As an Australian born from Argentine parents I’m speechless….
Everything that was shown & said is everything I was told by my parents (and relatives in Rosario) whilst I was a young boy to now.
From immigration to the economy to food & football & el Gaucho it’s like I was listening to my family talk to me again
Yes I’m Australian & love this country but I also have Argentine blood & passion that I cannot ignore & a tradition/culture that will stay with me for ever

I was in Argentina in March this year, but in the not so touristy San Juan, La Rioja and Catamarca province. The only other tourists there were Argentines from other provinces and Uruguayans. The people were so curious about what I was doing there, as they rarely see tourists. They were so surprised to hear that I had to fly 15 hours to get there and they asked so many questions. Where I am from, what am I doing here, if I like it here, and so on. And they loved that I made an attempt to speak in Spanish. In the end they would always say ''You are very welcome here''. I never had a bad experience. Such great people, amazing food and insane landscapes

I am Greek but i was in love with Argentina since 1990! I cried as a kid watching Maradona crying in the final. I cried in 2014 when I was in Plaza San Martin in Buenos Aires and finally I cried out of joy this time in 2022!!! 🇦🇷🇬🇷🇦🇷

Scotland brought football to Argentina and Brazil. Argentina gave us Diego, and then Messi as a thank you. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇦🇷

I remember when I first watched "The crazy day Messi saved his and Argentina's legacy" video on Copa90. I was in tears because I saw a man will his team through the WC qualifiers despite all odds. Watching people crticize and troll Messi for not being able to win an International trophy was agonizing. I would pray for Messi to win just one international trophy before he retired and silence the naysayers. Fast forward 7 years, Messi has now won 2 Copa Americas, a Finalissima and the crowning jewel, a World Cup. He has silenced all doubters and converted many into believers. What a comeback. Unparalleled legacy. Thanks Copa90 for this.

Heard an Argentinian describe Messi as the greatest artist and Maradona the greatest warrior.
I liked that, it allows you to see them not in competition with each other, but as separate professions approaching the same task, football.

As an Argentinian who immigrated at a young age due to the tough financial crisis in '01, I have to say this documentary truly captures the essence of our society—its triumphs and struggles. It goes beyond just soccer and paints a powerful picture of Argentina as a whole. Absolutely amazing work!

This made me drop tears, I know what it's like being South American from (Peru) and growing up kicking a ball wether it was a voleyball, a can or tincan whatever it was, GOL is a feeling that can't be even defined by science, long story short: My hooligan experiences can explain, in Argentina there's a saying " La Bombonera no tiembla, late" I know that feeling, I waited to 30 years of age to see my country back in the world cup 2018, and could've been 2022 Qatar, but we lose to Australia in the play off penalties, I wont say where I was, when i got the news it was devastating, but when Montiel hit the last penalty for Argentina I screamed, I celebrated with my Argentinian friends it felt great, 🇵🇪🇦🇷 we go back wayyyy back Bombonera 1969, 1978 its whatever, the 1985 back to back Qualifiers "Reyna vs Maradona" game in Lima 🇵🇪 1 -🇦🇷 0, Leg 2 in BA 🇵🇪 2 - 🇦🇷 2 Argentina qualifies in the last minutes, rainy muddy game Peru had it everybody in Peru says it was no goal, 🇵🇪 defender pushed in by 🇦🇷 Forward right about to kick the ball away from going in at the line mark but the man that put the ball in was Ricardo Gareca who we actually love, why? Because he became our head coach and took us to the 2018 World Cup after 35 years of frustrations, feeling less, but Peru got game, and I love Argentinean football cause of their extreme passion, and were great friends today, 2018 we joined together in Russia, would've happened in Qatar too, but in the last CA here in USA we got together again we love each other, so whatever time I took to comment this ill end with my pronoun " sin los Argentinos no existe el futbol" ❤
