Are his words a cycle of the times? Have all civilizations in our history been felled by vices such as these? Has man always been a victim to the tides of history? Of fate? Turbulent times ridden out by strong, virtuous men whose ideals and beliefs persist through generations, guiding us to progressively more prosperous and virtuous civilizations, until we reach a tipping point, and, is so often uttered, easy times give way to soft men, which lead to hard times.

Is our time any more special, any more consequential than those civilizations which have come to pass at the hands of those which seem to be wringing the last bit of righteous life from our necks as we speak? Are we living in the end times?

I believe not.

The world will always be full of pain, suffering, grief, and until we know a higher power, we are doomed to exist merely as a product of this world of pain and grief.

We are to exist in the world, not of the world.

Trust in the word of God. Know that there is so much more than the world around us. Do good, love one another, and know that while the furniture of this mortal world may change, god and his word will persist through all eternity.

It is all a test. Godspeed and may you pass. There is an objective truth.

Actually this is the 1996 version of his 1964 column, not too different from his 1964 version. See Snopes for the differences. The give away is is when he mentions metal detectors, though metal detectors have been around for a long time, there use to search for weapons only started after some highjackings in the U.S. after 1972.
