戸詰 Tozume

You are sitting behind the threshold of a Japanese-style room. There are two opponents inside the room, diagonally left and right.

This is a Kata for you to practice swinging the katana without bringing it up too high. If your swing is too big, your katana will get stuck in the lintel of the room. You have to make your movements smaller, like this.

I really love that these shorts both explain the default bunkai of the kata, but then, more importantly, explain the principles and muscle memory that the kata is actually developing in the student

I love that there are specific reasons for each thing you do in these kata. The old fighters had to consider all kinds of situations they might face in their training.

This sort of happens in Twilight Samurai. (Protagonist is a specialist in wakazashi and gains advantage fighting indoors).

Ah yes we have the same kata. But from what I understood and maybe you can ask your sensei, but the room had special floorboards that made bird noise if someone came through. Hence you would come out of the threshold room and attack. That was saved to be an advanced kata for 1st dan at our school.

There are notches all up and down the inner rafters of the house I grew up in. Guess how they got there. Hint: really wish I had learned this kata when I was a kid.

Speaking from personal experience, the katana makes the neatest holes I've ever seen, with a perfect cross section of the kissaki. 🤣🤣

Can you explain more about what I am seeing when he puts the sword back in the scabbard. I noticed a turn of his wrist. I've never seen that before. Is there a purpose to it or is it just the way Sensei himself does it through years of practice?
